her legs as Tamara jogged over. âWhy arenât you in the locker room?â Tamara asked. âWe have practice.â
âI need to do something first.â Ava was waiting by Coreyâs locker on Wednesday afternoon, hoping heâd stop by. He still hadnât shown, and the halls were nearly empty. âDid you talk to your mom after we beat Saint Francis? Is she going to change her mind?â
âSheâs actually thinking about it,â Tamara said. âThatâs pretty impressive.â
âWhat about PJ?â
âOh, heâs leaving.â Tamara fixed her braid. Ava wished Tamara didnât sound so sure.
âWell, at least for you itâs not like Saint Francis is building a super team for girlsâ basketball,â Ava pointed out.
âExactly what I told my mom!â Tamara grinned. âYou know, I had you all wrong. I thought you didnât like me, because youâre a Sackett.â
âI thought you didnât like me, because Iâm a Sackett,â Ava said.
âOh, no.â Tamara shook her head. âI didnât like you because youâre almost better than I am.â
âAlmost? Iâm just rusty from being injured. I am better than youâmuch better,â Ava bragged playfully.
âThen you better bring your A game today,â Tamara taunted.
âStep back, because Iâll bring my A-plus game!â Ava grinned.
âArenât you supposed to save the put-downs for the other team?â Corey sauntered over.
âTheyâll get theirs, wonât they?â Tamara slapped Avaâs back.
âWhen we hit the court together tomorrow, the other team will need sunglasses,â Ava agreed.
âFor what?â Corey asked.
âWe shine so bright,â said Ava.
âââCause weâre stars,â finished Tamara.
âThink fast.â Ava sent the basketball back to Tamara.
Tamara caught it and began to dribble toward the locker room. âLater.â
Ava watched her walk off. Something had changed. She still wanted to be better than Tamara, but she also wanted to play with her and win games together. PJ had done that. He might have messed up her dadâs football team, but heâd helped the middle school basketball team. Ava had a feeling she and Tamara would be a force for the rest of the season.
âOâSullivan, we need to talk.â Ava turned her attention to Corey.
He shot her a funny look. âWhy are you wearing Alexâs coat?â
âI kind of like it. Weâve been sharing this coat.â Ava turned up the collar. âI think Iâm rocking the hot pinkâeven with the jersey and ripped jeans.â
âItâs nice, I guess.â He reached to open his locker. âSackett, can you move? I need to get my books.â
âNo.â Ava folded her arms.
âNo?â
âIâll move when you tell me whatâs up.â Ava had originally planned to go about this in a more subtle way, but now that she was late for practice, she just wanted answers. Alex was going to strangle her. âDo you like Alex or not?â
âWhat does that matter?â he asked.
âIt matters a lot,â Ava insisted. âTo Alex.â
Corey snorted. âI doubt it. She sure doesnât like me.â
âWhereâd you get that idea?â Ava asked.
âI have eyes. I can see. Itâs obvious that Iâm not sophisticated enough for her.â Corey shook his head in disgust. âShe should go out with that older guy, if thatâs who sheâs into.â
âWhoa! Hold on.â Ava tried to process this information. âWhat older guy?â
âHow should I know? But sheâs always with him. I bet they use big words together.â
âBack up,â Ava commanded. âI have no idea what you are talking about.â
âI saw her twice with the same guy. I even saw them hold
