Before they could decide whether or not to raise the alarm, the elevator door closed and made the decision for them.
Tony jabbed at the button for the fourth floor, then bounced heel to toe as they slowly rose. âThe stairs would be quicker.â
âI doubt it.â
âItâs just Leeâs out there, with that thing in him . . .â
âYou saw this happen?â
âYeah. Iâve been seeing lots of weird shit with shadows, Henry. Thatâs what Arra made me forget. But she said the next shadow would take over someone in the studio to get information about this world and I saw it take over Lee.â
âAnd that made you remember?â
âMaybe. No. I donât know. I just did.â
Hard to keep his lips down over his teeth. âWell, weâll speak to her about that, too.â
âSheâs going to help him!â
âYes. She will.â
âWhat are you smelling?â Henryâs nostrils had flared.
âBesides you? Cleansers.â
Tony jerked as the elevator chimed and barely managed to stop himself from forcing his fingers between the doors and yanking them open faster. The moment the opening was large enough, he slipped through and raced down the hall, his Doc Martens thudding against the carpet. Although heâd neither seen nor heard him move, Henry was beside him when he reached Arraâs door.
âNow what?â
Henry reached past him and knocked.
âYeah, okay, I suppose thatâll work.â
He waited, thought he heard movement, and had raised his hand to knock again when Henryâs fingers closed around his wrist.
âShe heard it the first time. Sheâs standing just inside the door.â The words didnât so much get louder as more definite, more penetrating, as though they were being thrust through the painted wood. âI can hear her heart beating. It sped up the moment she saw us and itâs beating so quickly now that I have a strong suspicion she knows exactly why weâve come. And she knows that if she doesnât open the door, I will break it down, and even if thereâs an alarm or sheâs called for help, sheâll be dead before security even knows thereâs a problem.â
Tony punctuated the threat by punching the air. He only just barely resisted the urge to sneer, Iâve got a vampire by my side and Iâm not afraid to use him!
The door opened.
âDo I have to invite you in, Nightwalker?â
âNo.â
Arra nodded and stepped back out of the way. âThere was always a risk youâd realize his memories had been tampered with.â
â Heâs right here!â Tony snapped, pushing into the apartment. âAnd Henryâs not here because you screwed with my memories. Not only because you screwed with my memories,â he amended as her brows rose. âThereâs a piece of shadow in Lee Nicholas!â
âWhat?â
He turned to face her, his hands curled into fists. âYou heard me. Thereâs a piece of shadow in Lee Nicholas! It came through and it took him over just like you said it would.â
âAre you sure?â
âYeah, Iâm sure. I saw it happen!â
âSo youâre sure.â The sound of the door closing was almost the sound of a door slamming. âWhat do you want me to do about it?â
âFix it!â
âI canât.â
This time, Tony heard the lie. âYou can.â
She stared at him for a long moment, then brushed a bit of cat hair off her sleeve. âAll right, then; I wonât. And at the risk of sounding childish, you canât make me.â
âI got that covered. I canât make you, but Henry . . .â
âCan what?â she asked wearily, walking into the living room and dropping onto the end of the couch. âYou can kill me, Nightwalker, but you canât force me to have anything to do with the shadows.â
Henry swept his gaze slowly
