wallet, handing it to Jane. âCount my money. Please.â
âThis is very weird.â
âYeah, but Iâm drunker than I expected andâ¦â He paused, shrugging. âI donât know. I donât remember what I was going to say.â
She patted his shoulder and couldnât stop smiling.
âHow much money do I have?â
âYou have seventeen dollars.â
âI bet you seventeen dollars that youâre smart.â
He took his wallet and put it back in his pocket and then shook Janeâs hand.
âAll right,â she said.
When they were done shaking hands, he leaned his elbows on his knees and stared at the ground. Jane poked his side, and he looked over at her.
âHi,â he said.
âHi.â
âWhat are we going to do about you?â Teo asked.
âMe?â Jane asked, putting her hand to her chest to feign shock. âWhat about you? You are one sorry drunk.â
âIâm not sorry.â
âFine. But you are drunk.â
âHow are we going to settle this bet about how smart you are?â he asked.
âI donât know. Itâs a tough one.â
He put his hand out to her, and Jane took it, thinking he wanted to shake again, but instead he held on to it, twining their fingers together.
âI like your nail polish,â he said, smoothing his thumb over it.
âItâs called Sweet Escape.â
âItâs the color of a Creamsicle.â
âIâm sorry to say it doesnât taste like a Creamsicle.â The whole moment was surreal to Jane. It was like she was talking from outside her body. It felt like something was happening around her instead of to her.
âWhat are you escaping from?â
She didnât answer, instead drawing his hand closer to her and studying it in the light from the deck.
âWhat are you doing?â he asked, his voice right in her ear, his breath raising the hairs on her neck.
âIâm looking at your palm.â
âAre you going read it?â
âI was thinking about it.â She traced the lines on it lightly, and he shivered. Jane glanced over at him. He looked a little lost, but a lot less sleepy all of a sudden.
âI think weâre a lot alike, Jane Connelly,â he said.
âI think maybe we are, too,â she said after a while.
He pulled his hand away and leaned back in his chair, looking at the stars.
âThereâs a lot of stuff people donât know about,â he said.
She watched his eyes dart back and forth, like he was searching for something up there besides the stars and the low-flying planes.
âI donât know a lot of stuff,â he continued. âBut I want to learn everything.â
Her heart constricted, and she felt tears rise in her eyes. Something about Teo in this moment was everything she loved and hated about life, all rolled into one.
The next thing Jane knew, Teo leaned over in his chair, closed his eyes, and aimed for the approximate location of Janeâs lips. But his drunk brain misjudged the distance, and instead he fell out of his chair and flat on his face.
âOuch,â he muttered, rolling over.
Jane could hardly stop laughing. âAre you okay?â
âThat was supposed to be romantic,â he said mournfully. âLike on the roof. I was going to be the right person.â
Jane offered her hand to him. âCome on,â she said, helping him sit up.
âThat hurt my arm and my pride.â He scrunched up his face. âI am really thirsty. I should have more beer.â He scrambled to his feet, but Jane pushed him back into his chair.
âNo more beer. Iâll get you some water.â
âOkay, fine,â he said, huffing out a breath.
âStay here,â she said. âIâll be back.â
He nodded.
Jane went in search of the cooler where sheâd found water bottles earlier, but it was empty. She went into the house but
