upside down within a week. I can’t imagine getting through the next seven days without him. My Matt.
Like every morning, my breakfast is waiting on the table, and he sits with me in the kitchen. His hand plays with my hair and my hand rests on his thigh. Neither of us wants to let go of each other and we’re not ready to go our separate ways.
Will leans against the kitchen counter and drinks his coffee. He watches us and a small smile plays across his lips.
Then it’s time for Matt to go. He kisses me gently and tells me he’ll call me. He gets up, goes to the door but comes back to kiss me hard and passionately. He’s finding it difficult to leave. That kind of makes me happy.
“Have fun with Tom and Will, babe,” he kisses me on the cheek.
“Yeah, thanks.”
He grins. “No, I mean have fun with Tom and Will.” He winks and goes to the door.
“What’s that supposed to mean Matt?”
He laughs and disappears out the door.
“Matt, what do you mean?” But he can’t hear me anymore.
Will puts an arm around my shoulder and kisses me on the forehead. “Thea, I’d like to spend some time with you to get to know you better. Tom is on some construction site and won’t be back until Sunday morning.”
I swallow nervously. Time with Will. Alone.
“I’m not sure that’s such a good idea.”
I sense his body stiffen. He’s hurt. “Why not?” His voice sounds a little broken.
“I don’t want to hurt Matt,” I whisper.
I feel his hands relax. “You won’t hurt Matt if we spend time together.”
I nod against his chest. “I will. I just don’t know if I have the strength to say ‘no’ to you.”
“Then say ‘yes’ to me.” I can feel his smile.
“I can’t,” I murmur. ‘It would hurt him. We pretty much promised each other we’d be exclusive yesterday.” I feel his sharp intake of breath.
“He said he didn’t want you to sleep with anyone else?” He sounds disbelieving.
I try to extricate myself from his arms but he holds me tightly. “Yeah.”
“What exactly did he say?” he asks me, looking serious, and I wonder at his insistence, don’t understand and try to remember what Matt said if it is so important to him.
“I made a joke about the waiter and after that he said he didn’t want me sleeping with anyone else.”
“Did he really say it like that or did he just not want you sleeping with the waiter?” he asks.
“Hmm, probably more the latter,” I say after thinking about it, and he visibly relaxes. He lifts my chin and looks me in the eyes. “I don’t want you to sleep with the waiter either.”
His look is intense, and my knees go weak. The only reason I’m still standing is that he’s holding me.
“Go out with me tonight, baby.”
Baby. He can’t call me that. It makes me weak…
“I can’t. Not tonight,” I add, even though it goes against my better judgement.
He watches me closely. “Okay, tomorrow then. I’m going to a charity gala, and I’d like you to go with me.”
I should say no, but I can’t. I know it sounds corny, but it’s like he can see into my soul. I can only tell him the truth and the truth is, I want to go out with him.
I nod and he smiles. He kisses me lightly on the lips and lets me go. I almost collapse without his support, and he quickly grabs my arm to keep me from crumpling to the floor. He fishes his credit card out of his wallet.
“My PIN’s 7483. You need an evening dress.”
I ignore the card and look at him critically. “I’ll buy my own dress, thanks.”
He grins. “But you need one with a tag that says Chanel, Dior, Valentino or some other fancy brand.”
I swallow. What the hell am I setting myself up for? “Doesn’t matter.”
He pulls me to his chest. “I don’t want you spending a fortune on something that’s pocket change for me.”
“It doesn’t feel right, Will.”
His eyes twinkle. “Are you going to argue about everything?”
That makes me smile. “Very probably.”
