disconcerting to think that I move freely doing god knows what in the middle of the night.” The feel of the leather sofa against my skin is somewhat comforting, but I find her words and the way that she treats me, more reassuring than anything else.
“I am going to up the dosage of your sleeping pills, maybe then we can finally get you some much needed sleep. I certainly don’t want to get your hopes up, but I have had great success with hypnosis. Our next session is in two days and I would like to reschedule it for tomorrow at this exact same time. We need to get to the bottom of this so you can get on with your life and have a little bit of peace of mind. Continue to do your breathing exercises, plus your meditation at night before you take the sleeping pills, and I will see you tomorrow.” Escorting me to the door, I felt like a heavy weight was lifted off my shoulders, but knew from previous sessions that the feeling wouldn’t last for very long.
I cross the reception area, stop for a moment to look at my reflection off the glass of the door; I’m dressed impeccably: a flowing black skirt, topped with a blood red blouse that I instantly took a liking to in the shop window the other day. I push my hair out of my eyes, give one last look, and let out a sigh of relief.
When I came to this town I knew that I was unusual, but I really just wanted to be normal. I still couldn’t believe every time I went to the hairdresser to color my hair, the dyes only lasted for a day before my hair turned white again the next morning. Before long, I just accepted there was nothing that I could do about it.
I walked with my head held high and my back straight through the parking lot because I didn’t want anybody to know I was damaged in any way. Not being able to cultivate friends has been hard on me, but there was one person in this town that I had an instant friendship with. Her name was Darla, and she was one of the first hairdressers that I went to see. We now see each other from time to time, but even she doesn’t know about the content of the dreams. Andrew was always trying to get me to open up, but I just couldn’t voice how those dreams made me feel like a caged animal, ready to strike at anything around me.
As I was reaching my key to the door of my blue Nissan Rogue, I suddenly felt I wasn’t alone. There was something in the air, and I found myself darting my eyes back and forth watching for any unnecessary movement or an unusual occurrence.
“Tina. You have been a very hard person to find; it has taken a lot of resources to track you down.” The voice sounded familiar, but in a very distant way, like I had heard it somewhere before.
“I’m sorry, but I do believe you have mistaken me for somebody else; perhaps I look like this Tina person that you are looking for but my name is Gail. I’m sorry, but I really do have to be going, as I have a very important appointment to keep.” I once again tried to unlock the car door when the unseen woman grabbed me by the wrist and turned me to face her. Her face was similar to mine but most astonishingly, her hair was the same white snow. This was the first time that I had ever met somebody with this affliction; somehow, I had a feeling that she had something to do with my past.
“Your betrayal cannot be stood for – and this running away has only made the problem worse than it was before. They have given me the duty of tracking you down; they demand punishment. It has taken me months and then it was almost like you wanted to get caught. If I was you, I would have continued moving, never staying in one place too long, but you did the exact opposite. You actually put down roots with a…human male, and that is almost as distasteful as getting involved with him. I can’t even bring myself to say his name, because it’s like bile on the edge of my tongue.” I could see the anger, but instead of being afraid, I was more curious about who this woman was.
    “You say
