because I make them myself,â Zoey explained. âTheyâre not the name brand.â
âI donât care if theyâre the name brand,â the girl said. âI totally love your designs.â
I wish Ivy felt that way, Zoey thought.
âIâm going to get this one,â the girl said, picking out a bracelet with a sunflower design.
âThanks for being my first sale!â Zoey said, taking her money. âDo you want a bag?â
âNo, Iâm just going to wear it right now. Itâs a gift from me to me!â the girl said.
Zoey laughed. âWell, enjoy wearing it!â
Shortly afterward, an older woman came up and started browsing.
âThese are just beautifulâand so unusual,â she said, picking up one of the silk-screened scarves with Ezraâs painting on it.
âMy friend did the artwork,â Zoey said. âHereâs a card with his information if youâre interested in buying one of his paintings.â
She handed the woman one of the cards Marcus had designed with Ezraâs details.
âThank you,â the woman said. âIn the meantime, Iâd like to buy this scarf for my daughter-in-law. Itâs just her kind of thing.â
Things are starting to look up, Zoey thought. She just hoped it kept looking up enough so sheâd make a profit.
She wondered if Ezra was going to stop by to hang out, and if so, when. That would definitely brighten up her day.
Just then Zoey saw a familiar face step into the boothâJan.
âYour layout looks wonderful!â Jan said. âSo creative with the ladders and the twine clothesline.â
Zoey laughed. âWe had to do thatâbecause I didnât have enough display materials!â
She told Jan about the short delivery and setup hiccups from the day before.
âWell, you certainly made the best of it,â Jan said.âNow, I need to find a present for a friend. . . . What do you suggest?â
âI recommend the silk-screened scarves,â Ezra said, surprising Zoey by sneaking into the booth while she was talking to Jan.
âHi, Ezra! Have you come to help and hang out?â Zoey asked as Jan looked around.
He grinned. âAt your service!â
âEzra did the original artwork that I silk-screened onto the scarves,â Zoey explained to Jan. âHereâs his card.â
âThese are so beautiful,â Jan said. âIâm not sure which one I like best!â
She ended up buying one for her friend and one for herself.
âSee you in the store!â she said. âGood luck with the rest of the fair.â
âDid you see? She took my card!â Ezra said. âMaybe sheâll buy a painting!â
âAnother customer who bought a scarf took the card too,â Zoey told him.
âThanks, Zoey,â Ezra said. âThis could turn out to be a pretty good thing for me. Iâm sorry I freaked out.â
âIâm sorry, too,â Zoey said. âBecause you were rightâI should have asked you first.â
âHey, lookâLibby and your other friends are here,â Ezra said.
Sure enough, Kate, Priti, and Libby converged on the booth.
âHowâs it going?â Priti asked. âAre you a gazillionaire yet?â
âUm . . . Iâm still a few gazillions short,â Zoey admitted. âIt was pretty slow earlier.â
âIt looked like a lot more people were arriving when Mom dropped us off,â Libby said. âSo hopefully things will get busier.â
âThe bracelets look really good,â Priti said. âIâm sorry I overreacted about you copying them.â
âItâs okay,â Zoey said. âI understand.â
âHey, do you mind if I go look around before it gets too busy?â Ezra asked. âI havenât seen any of the fair yet.â
âSureâI got to go around and look yesterday when I was scrounging for
