worked stuff over in his head.
Tanner refused to drive himself crazy with what-ifs. Shit happened. Most of the time, you couldn’t control it, so why get worked up over it.
Still, Nica was different. He wanted to get into her head, know what was going on. Know what she was trying to hide from them and why.
He wanted to dig around in his own head and figure out why he knew his feelings for her were different from any other woman he’d ever known.
And he wanted to know if Jensen felt the same.
His gaze flashed to his brother, sitting at the far end of the couch, eyes closed.
Though not for long. His eyes flashed open as if he’d felt Tanner looking at him and they exchanged a glance that told Tanner all he needed to know about what his brother was thinking.
Exactly the same thing.
She’d given them today. And tomorrow, she’d said, she was starting a new job and would be unavailable for months.
What the hell kind of job was that? And why wouldn’t she tell them more?
Something didn’t ring true.
Not that he didn’t trust her. Hell, he trusted her enough to have sex without a condom, which was a huge leap for him, even with the medical report. Same for Jensen.
And she’d trusted them as well. At least with her body.
Tanner wanted to know more.
And he knew Jensen did too.
But if they continued like this, none of them would have enough strength to ask questions between all the sex.
And maybe that was exactly the way she wanted it.
“Hmm, I think I could sleep right here, but I don’t think your couch will ever be the same if we don’t get up soon.”
Nica’s husky voice penetrated deep into Tanner’s chest, wrapping around his lungs and squeezing. Hell, with very little effort he could probably get it up again and that would be a fucking miracle, considering.
“Leather cleans up easy, baby.” Jensen chuckled. “Now you know our dirty little secret.”
Nica chuckled and damn if his cock didn’t twitch.
“Glad to hear it,” she said, her hands flexing against Tanner’s chest. “Now, though, I think I need a shower.”
“Then your wish is our command.” Jensen stood and lifted her into his arms, Tanner’s skin registering the loss by breaking out in gooseflesh. “Tanner’ll find you something to wear.”
As his brother disappeared up the stairs with Nica, Tanner sat up slowly.
She trusted them enough to let them into her body in such intimate ways and yet she wouldn’t tell them what was going on in her life.
That was going to change. Tanner wanted answers. And he wanted them now.
Chapter Six
“Nica, are you okay?”
Tira’s voice sounded wary, a little frightened, and Nica’s chest immediately constricted with worry.
With Tanner upstairs getting dressed and Jensen in the basement, Nica had locked herself in the powder room off the kitchen to return Tira’s message from an hour ago.
“I’m fine, Tira. Did something happen?”
Tira sighed, a little weary, a little confused. “I had a vision, a pretty indistinct one. I saw you, crying, worried. I don’t know where you were. I didn’t recognize your surroundings. Nica, I’ve never had a vision like that. It was almost like,” she sighed again, “like someone was deliberately messing with it, making it fuzzy.”
“What do you think it means?”
“I don’t know. I do know I’ve had this weird anxiety all day, like something was going to happen but I didn’t know what or when or to whom. Are you sure you’re okay?”
“I’m fine, T, really. Better than fine.”
“Ooh, now that sounds interesting.” Tira’s tone lightened considerably. “I’m going to want lots of details when you—”
Tira paused and for a second Nica thought the phone went dead.
“T, are you there?”
“Yeah, I thought I saw— Hold on a sec. Someone’s at the door.”
Nica heard Tira put the phone down and walk to the door. Their apartment door opened with its distinctive squeak…
And Tira’s scream ricocheted through
