Iâd been walking.â
âItâs a difficult situation. Tom has always been close to his brother, so close it bordered on hero-worship.â
âAnd itâs upset him to discover that his brotherâs wife has the reputation of a whore.â
âHe was disturbed to discover that your child isnât Johnâs,â Michael commented diplomatically.
âYes, well, thereâs no denying that.â She drank her wine.
He refilled her glass. âMrs Smythe told me youâd been raped.â
âWhatâs done is over and finished with. Thereâs no point in talking about it.â
âYouâre obviously upset about more than what Tom thinks of you,â Michael ventured. When she didnât answer, he said, âTell me to go to hell if you think Iâm prying.â
Maud looked at him. He was so like Harry, it would be easy to fool herself that she was talking to Harry. Wasnât that just what sheâd wished for earlier that day?
âWhat happened tonight to send you out on to the street without a hat, shawl, or gloves?â he pressed.
âNothing,â she said quickly. Too quickly.
âYou have a cut and the beginnings of a spectacular bruise on your face.â
Maud instinctively lifted her fingers to her left cheek.
âMrs Smythe told me that you were moving in with your father.â
âI did. He went to the mess straight from his office this evening â¦â She fell silent.
âAnd?â
âHe returned drunk and ordered me out of the bungalow.â
âAfter hitting you?â
Michael was shocked at the silence which confirmed his suspicions. âYou left your baby with him?â
âThe child will be fine. His nurse is with him.â
The door opened. Johnâs brother Tom Mason walked in with his bride Clarissa, David Knight, and Georgiana Downe.
Tom stared at Maud. The silence was absolute, claustrophobic, and embarrassing until Tom broke it. âThis is Claryâs and my wedding breakfast.â He pointed at Maud. âI didnât invite her, so what in hell is she doing here?â
Maud left her chair. âIâm leaving.â
âNot until Iâve seen to that bruise. Michael, send down to the kitchen for ice.â Always the doctor, Georgiana examined Maudâs face. âHow did this happen?â
âI hit myself on a cupboard door. Please, excuse me. I really do have to go.â
âCanât bear to be in the same room as your brother-in-law,â Tom taunted.
Maud slipped past him and fled down the stairs.
âIâll make sure sheâs all right.â Michael went to the door.
âIâll go with you.â
âNo, Georgie.â Michael stopped his sister from following him. âI was the one who managed to get Maud in here, which in retrospect was not the wisest move I could have made. And as Basraâs been flooded with sick and wounded since Kut fell, you and David have scarcely had a free moment in weeks. Stay with Tom, and wait for the others. Order me a pilaff. That can be easily heated up if Iâm delayed. Iâll be back as soon as Iâve seen Maud somewhere safe.â
âI heard sheâd moved in with her father.â Tom realised Clary was looking at him. âI havenât been watching her but until John divorces her sheâs still my sister-in-law.â
âIf she doesnât want to return to her fatherâs bungalow, Mrs Butler might find her a bed in the mission, at least for tonight.â Georgie advised. âIf thereâs no room in the Lansing, Angela and Peter might take her in. Iâll ask them when they get here.â
âThanks, Georgie, Iâll try the mission first. Thatâs if Maud will go there.â
âYou sure â¦â
âStay here, toast the bride and groom, and enjoy your meal, Georgie. You work such long hours you get hardly any free time.â Michael ran
