face.
âOh, hi, Jade. Yeah, yeah, I do, but listen, Iâll call you back, OK? Somethingâs just come up.â She put her phone down. âYouâve already set up a meeting with Liz Hornby?â she said, looking at me.
I am an actress, so, really, I should be very good at lying. After all, everything I do on-screen is basically me trying to convince people Iâm someone Iâm not. But when it comes to actual lyingâoff set and in the real worldâIâm terrible. I canât look at the person Iâm lying to and my voice goes all silly and small.
âEr, yes,â I said, trying to sound normal. âItâs all been arranged, but it can easily be unarranged. Thereâs a new part coming up, but â¦â
Just at that moment, Pilar arrived with two drinks. Nydia and I both took ours and drank them down in one gulp.
âBut itâs ridiculous! How can I teach you to kiss?â
Anne-Marie said. âItâs not something you teach . Itâs something you sort of just learn .â
I sighed. âI canât just learn it, Anne-Marie. I havenât got time to learn it or anyone to learn it with. Itâs supposed to be my first kiss, and I want my first kiss to be with Justin. Itâs got to be perfect.â
Anne-Marie grinned like the Cheshire Cat from Alice in Wonderland . âYou fancy Justin de Souza, donât you? Justin, the star of the show, the teen hunk! You fancy him and you seriously think that he might like you! You! Poor guyâhas he read the script yet? Heâll probably resign when he does and then you wonât have to worry anymore.â
I stood up and looked at Nydia. âThis is pointless,â I said. âLetâs just go.â Nydia stood up too, but Anne-Marie waved for her to sit back down . She did with a plonk .
âHang on,â Anne-Marie said. âKissing scenes are easy, really. You donât even have to worry about tongue. You just need to get the mood right; get your nose in the right place and youâll be fine. And as youâve so got the hots for Justin, youâll have no problem. You just need someone to practice on. Iâll arrange it, OK? If you stick to your side of the agreement, that is.â
I looked uncertainly at Nydia. âOK, but when? Iâm on the set tomorrow and I got the new scripts today with the kissing scene in them. The read-through will be on Monday and weâll start shooting it Thursday.â
Anne-Marie thought for a moment.
âTomorrow evening. Here. No one will be here anyway.â
âOK,â Nydia and I said together.
Nydia picked up her bag. âListen, Anne-Marie, thanks a lot for doing this â¦â she began.
âDonât thank me . You know why Iâm doing it. I must be the only girl in the world whose father is a movie producer and wonât pull any strings to get her parts. He says if I want respect in the business, I have to make my own way. Well, Iâm making my own way. Iâm pulling your strings and thatâs all, so donât start getting all excited and thinking weâll be friends. We wonât. Ever.â She picked up a magazine from under her chair and opened it. âYou can go now. Iâll see you tomorrow.â
We walked through the house and down the long drive, back to the real world of traffic fumes and noise.
âWell, that was hideous,â I said. âIâm so sorry I was late.â Nydia scowled at me. âIâm sorry, Nydia! I wouldnât have been, honest, but Mum wanted to âtalkâ to me and I couldnât just go, could I? Not with her and Dad â¦you know.â
Nydia sighed. âI know,â she said. âBut sheâs so horrible to me, Ruby. Sheâs even more horrible to me than she is to you. I just donât get why; I really donât. What have I ever done to make her hate me so much? She makes me feel like Iâm not even a
