a mask. The real you is hiding in there somewhere.â
Quietly, but firmly, Faye said, âAnd thatâs exactly how I want to keep it.â
Confusion knitted Catherineâs brow. âBut why, Faye? Youâre a beautifulââ
âIâm not,â Faye insisted, cutting Catherine off. âI donât like the real me, to tell you the truth. The real me got her priorities all screwed up. She messed up everything and now she just has to live with what sheâs done.â
Empathy made Catherineâs heart go all warm and fuzzy. âYouâre being way too hard on yourself. The clinic is a wonderful place. And you were the one who made it happen.â She shifted, her head tilting a fraction. âFaye, since the clinic was your baby, why arenât you running the place?â
âOh, that was David Grahamâs idea,â she said. âHe felt we needed someone flashy in the job. Thatâs why he hadme recruit Dr. Richie. And I was made second in command.â
Catherine could tell the subject was a bone sliver that stuck in Fayeâs craw.
âBut now heâs gone,â Catherine couldnât help but point out, âand Rileyâs in the position. Does Dr. Graham even know youâre interested in the job?â
âIâm a woman, Catherine. Dr. Graham hasnât promoted a woman to a top managerial position in, well, ever.â Faye raised an agitated hand to her hair, fidgeting. âIt doesnât really matter. All that matters is that the clinic is open to the public.â
Catherine opened her mouth to respond, but Faye exclaimed, âWhat am I saying? Of course, it matters. Running the clinic should have been my job.â
Meeting Catherineâs gaze in the mirror, Fayeâs eyes went wide. âIâm sorry. That was a terrible outburst.â
âDonât apologize. Iâm just happy you feel safe enough to confide in me.â
âI like Riley,â Faye rushed to say. âAnd heâs doing a great job at the clinic. It was actually good of him to accept it since things are such a shambles.â
âYes. But heâs not really happy there.â
Evidently, Faye hadnât noticed. âReally? Wow, what I wouldnât give to become director.â She heaved a frustrated sigh. âBut Dr. Graham wonât go for it.â
âSurely he knows of all youâve done up to this point.â
âIâm not sure he does. Although I have no idea why he wouldnât. Heâs got this way of overlooking me.â
âWell, weâve got to change that,â Catherine announced. âAnd wearing this dress to work on Mondayâwith your hair downâis just the start!â
âI donât know that I want to be noticed for my physicalattributes, Catherine.â Faye attempted to take a backward step. âI want to be respected for my brains and my ability.â
âAs you said, youâre a woman. And as a woman you have to use your brains and your ability and whatever attributes you can to get ahead.â
âButââ
âNo buts. Get in there and try on those other outfits.â
For several long seconds, Catherine feared her friend would refuse. But suddenly Fayeâs beautiful eyes lit with excitement, and something else, too. Determination? And with a new purpose, she spun on her toe and disappeared into the cubicle.
Not too much later they were back out on the sidewalk with several new shopping bags in tow.
âThanks, Catherine,â Faye said, her cheeks flushed with marvelous color. âThat was so much fun.â
âThe fun isnât over. We passed a salon.â She indicated up the street with a jerk of her head. âLetâs go have a facialâmy treat. And then I want to show you how a little makeup can set off your best features.â
Faye admitted, âIâve never been big on makeup. Never really had the
