From what he’d heard from others who had mated, the first claiming always wiped them out. She would be part werewolf and part demon, being able to shift any time, and living however long she and her mates saw fit.
They quietly pulled out of her and covered her with a sheet. Hoyt glanced at her sleeping form one last time. Something foreign raced through him.
“I feel it, too,” said Chax. “We can’t lose her, Hoyt. There is more to this attack than we know. Wol-itelm believes someone close to her is targeting her.” With a wave of his hand, Chax clothed both of them before they entered the living room.
Hoyt shook his head. “You need to warn me when you do that, Chax. I’m not used to all your demon magic.”
They observed Melody curled up on the couch sound asleep. Ben and Shane sat opposite her on the loveseat.
Hoyt laughed, shaking his head. He strode to the kitchen and grabbed a cup of coffee, followed by Chax, Shane and Ben. “Let’s go outside where we can talk,” he announced.
The men followed him out onto the deck.
“Someone wants your family destroyed,” Hoyt told Ben. “The bomb that killed your parents was just the beginning of our battle. And why didn’t you tell me Tabatha couldn’t shift, that she’s only part were?”
“Dad told me the pack wanted her killed the day she was born. He wanted me to look into the pack’s activities to make sure they weren’t planning anything. My father thought while I was training I could nose around the pack and see what they were up to.” Ben ran a hand through his hair. “The elders informed my father she was a freak; that something wasn’t right about her and that an Alpha shouldn’t be saddled with the problems she would bring. Our parents moved out to this cabin away from our pack. Dad stepped down as Alpha, but the pack wouldn’t let the matter of my sister rest. That’s why our captain kept me hidden and why he wanted to move Tabby away. We did it to protect her. Our parents had no other choice.”
“You need to tell her the truth about her family.” Hoyt’s gaze shifted to Chax.
“Something’s off here, Chax. Did you see the way his eye twitched before he turned away from us? That only happens when he’s pissed off or lying about something.”
“How do you know?” Chax moved toward the stairs, leaned against the railing, and scanned Ben.
“All through high school,” Hoyt replied, “Ben’s parents always knew when he was lying. All they had to do was glance at him, and he’d freeze up. Hell, in one of our training classes Ben forgot to do the assignment and started to lie about it. His eye twitched and he couldn’t even look at the instructor’s face. They knew right off the bat he wouldn’t be a field operative.” Hoyt crossed his ankles and propped his hip on the railing, all the while shifting his gaze to Ben.
Ben tensed and walked to the railing, switching the subject. “My parents and I kept her protected. We knew the pack females would tear her apart. We hoped she would mate with a strong wolf to bring the other half of her magic over, and here you are, finally. I just never imagined it would be you. I should have brought you home sooner. I knew Melody was my mate, but to have Shane as a mate, too, took me by surprise. Boy, is Melody pissed, and Tabby will be as well when she finds out we hid all of this from her.” Ben sighed, and glanced at Chax.
Hoyt moved to the other side of Ben.
“Tabby’s going to be pissed at you two for changing her before she was ready for it and for giving her no way out.” Ben laughed sadly and ducked just in time.
Two glass coffee mugs smacked against the huge tree behind where his head had been. Glass pieces landed at his feet. Hoyt glanced up at Tabatha and Melody, who stood just inside the door, both of them in robes.
Shaking his head, Hoyt smiled. “ I should’ve known it wouldn’t take her long to change. It looks like our mate is more powerful than we first
