rubbish.â
A very tall, bearded man with hooded grey eyes gave her an angry stare.
âThatâs the artist,â murmured Poppy.
âShit.â
âOnly joking.â
Poppy grinned. Claudia suppressed the urge to throttle her. Instead, in casual tones she said, âJakeâs quite nice, isnât he?â
âWho, you mean Jake my boss? Trainspotter Jake?â
Claudia looked flustered. âIt was only the windbreaker. Well, and the trousers. What I mean is, heâs better than you expect⦠once you actually get to know him.â
Poppy looked amused.
âIâm sure heâll be flattered to hear it.â
âI canât remember,â Claudia blurted out in desperation, âif you said he was married or living with someone.â
âNow this,â said Poppy, âis what I call interesting. Donât tell me youâre keen on Jake.â
Why did she have to look so⦠so gleeful ? Affronted, Claudia lifted her chin.
âIâm only asking. Why shouldnât I? Heâs obviously keen on me.â
Poppy grinned. âNo he isnât.â
âYes he is.â
âClaudia, I promise you. He isnât.â
âYou donât know that.â God, Poppy could be a cow sometimes. âWhat are you, some kind of world authority on The Kind of Girls Men Go For?â
âCalm down, calm down.â Poppy made soothing gestures with her hands. âYouâve got hold of the wrong end of the stick.â
If I could get hold of the right end, Claudia thought vengefully, Iâd hit you with it.
âLook,â Poppy continued, âwhat I meant was, Jake doesnât go for any kind of girl. Heâs gay.â
Claudia was stunned. âGay? Are you sure?â
âSure Iâm sure. He keeps pretty quiet about it, but he definitely is,â Poppy explained in businesslike fashion. âThatâs why thereâs no point trying to chat him up. So you see, I wasnât being bitchy when I said he wouldnât be interested in you, I was just being honest.â Unaware that Jake was back from the bar and standing right behind her, she went on: âI know itâs sad but what can you do? Jakeâs as bent as a nine bob note. Actually I think he may be a transvestite tooââ
âRIGHT,â Jake hissed into her ear, âthat is ENOUGH. What in heavenâs name do you think you are PLAYING AT?â
Poppy jumped a mile. The voice was so filled with fury she barely recognized it. When she turned and saw the look in Jakeâs eyes she felt herself go white. She had never seen him so mad before. She wouldnât have believed him capable of such blood-curdling fury.
âOh Jake, Iâm sorry⦠I know it isnât something you make a song and dance aboutââhelp, more visions of Shirley Basseyââbut I just thought it would be easier to explain to Claudia why she shouldnât⦠um, why you⦠er, wouldnâtâ¦â
Jake looked ready to explode. Poppy gave up trying to explain. Cringing, she edged a few inches backwards. What a good job they were surrounded by people so Jake couldnât bellow at her.
âI-do-not-believe-this.â He wasnât bellowing. The words were spat out through gritted teeth, which was bad enough. âLetâs get one thing settled right now. I am not gay. I never have been gay and I never will be gay.â His dark eyes, like twin coals, bored through his spectacles and directly into Poppyâs brain. âAnd Iâm sorry to disappoint you, but I donât wear womenâs clothes either.â
âOh,â said Poppy in a small voice. âJake, Iâm sorry. My mistake.â
âYou see, this is exactly what sheâs like,â Claudia told Jake with an air of triumph. âShe says things without thinking, just comes out with these ridiculous statementsââ
âI didnât say it
