she forgot she wasnât bright and shining. She forgot she was the âsmartâ sister. She forgot Duke didnât love her because the fierceness of his embrace said otherwise.
âPlease,â she said, lifting her head.
âOkay, the night of the Gala. After the event, weâll leave together and youâll share my bed.â
âIt sounds kind of cold,â she said.
âI thought you were a big girl.â
âI am. But this isnât easy for me.â
âThatâs why I should let you goâ¦but I canât.â
âWhat ifâ¦â Camiâs voice trailed off.
âLeave the details to me,â Duke said. He wanted to be her dream lover if only for one night.
âEvery detail?â
âDown to the clothes you wear.â
She thought about it. Every step sheâd taken tonight had led her to this moment. She realized at once that love didnât care who the object of that affection was. It only craved an outlet. She knew she had to make a decision and she knew in her heart her answer.
âYes,â she said.
Â
âDuke, got a minute?â
Duke glanced up to see Max standing in the doorway. âSure, whatâs up?â
âA situation has come to my attention.â
The graveness of Maxâs tone and the fact that heâd come to Dukeâs office instead of beckoning him upstairs told Duke he wasnât going to like whatever came next. He wondered if Max had found out heâd kissed Cami Jones a couple of times.
He wondered if his boss and friend was now going to forbid him to see the woman whoâd become important to him in ways he couldnât define. He wondered if heâd tolerate that kind of censure.
âHave a seat,â Duke said, gesturing to the leather visitorâs chair.
Max settled himself slowly. He looked around the office and took stock of the new decorations. âThis is homier than your office in Japan.â
âI had a few tips on the decor. We have a situation?â
âYes, I think Fielding in accounting may be embezzling.â
Dukeâs analytical mind jumped through hoops keeping up with Max. Though he wanted to take a minute to enjoy the fact that his relationship with Cami wasnât public knowledge, he didnât. They discussed Fielding and the men Duke would assign to the task of tracking funds and monitoring Fieldingâs activities.
Max wrapped up the conversation and stood.Pacing to the window, he held his hands loosely behind his back. Duke joined him, looking at the skyline of Atlanta.
âIs there a company policy regarding fraternization?â Duke asked after a few minutes had passed in silence.
âWhy?â Max didnât take his eyes off the skyline.
âIâm in aâ¦â Duke didnât know how to define what he had with Cami. Nuclear reaction maybe.
âRelationship?â Max suggested, and Duke thought he heard a hint of amusement in his friendâs voice.
The very term heâd been trying to avoid. He didnât want to think about Cami in those terms because relationships were an area where he had little control. Emotion was the one region where his power was useless. âYeah, I guess.â
Maxâs dark gaze bore into him. But the interest was friendly not censuring. Duke hadnât really dated in the years heâd known Max. One-night stands, short-term affairs he had, but relationshipsâ never.
âWith whom?â
âCami Jones.â
Maxâs wise eyes surveyed him. Then he nodded.
âNo problem.â
âI have to be honest here and tell you that even if there were a problem, I might not break it off.â
âDo you two have plans for tonight?â Max asked.
âWhy?â
âI have tickets to the Braves game and canât make it.â
âIâll take them,â Duke said. And Miss Jones, too.
Though he was uncomfortable encouraging Cami to deepen her
