that story.â
Adam narrowed his eyes at her curiously, seeing through her hostility. âNo,â he said after a moment. âItâs more than that.â
âIt isnât,â Toni said.
âYouâre lying,â Adam said simply.
âHow do you know?â
âBecause I live with teenage boys who lie to me every day. I know what it looks like.â
Adam watched as Toni deflated a little before him, the fight seeping out of her like a balloon with a leak.
âDoes this have something to do with Jasmineâs baby shower?â he asked.
âWhy would you ask that?â
âYour brother told me you got into a fight about it this morning.â
âDo you guys talk about everything?â Toni asked incredulously. âYouâre worse than girls.â
âYou didnât answer my question,â Adam said, ignoring her tangent. âIs this because of the drama between you and Jasmine?â
âNo.â She folded her arms stubbornly. He peered at her and she sighed. âMaybe.â When he kept staring, she rolled her eyes. âWhy does it matter anyway?â
âBecause I donât want you to do this because youâre mad at Jasmine,â he said. â âCause next week when youâre not mad at her anymore, youâll back out again.â
He trained his eyes on her to make sure she understood. âYou want to bail on me? Thatâs fine. But these boys are depending on you. If you say youâre going to do this, youâve got to do this for real. One hundred percent. No halfway. It has to be for the boys.â
Adam watched Toni chew on her lip. He knew he was taking a risk in even considering letting her come along. And even as he stood there watching her contemplate what he said, he couldnât help but contemplate whether this was really what God wanted him to do.
âIs Jerome going?â she asked.
Adam nodded. âYes.â
She looked down at the ground for a moment, then back at Adam. âOkay.â Adam caught the resolution in her eyes as she spoke. âIâll do it. Iâll go. For real.â
âYou sure?â
âIâm sure.â
âWhy?â
She shrugged. âI like Jerome. Heâs kinda grown on me.â
Adam stared at her for a moment, to make sure she was serious. âOkay,â he finally said.
âOkay,â she echoed. They started walking down Winslow Street, away from Jacobâs House.
âSo you gonna tell me what I have to do?â she asked after they had been walking for a bit.
âOnly if you tell me what that Jerry Springer moment at Treyâs the other night was about.â
She didnât miss a beat. âNone of your business.â
âOkay,â Adam said, not fazed. âMaybe tell me then why youâre so exhausted.â
Adam expected her to give another dismissive response. But when she paused a bit before answering, he glanced over at her. She was biting her lip again. That was her giveawayâthe thing she always did before she went and did something totally out of character. Like answer honestly.
âI have trouble sleeping.â
Adamâs brow furrowed. âWhy?â
Toni shrugged. âI just do,â she said. âI never really sleep through the night.â
That would explain a lot of things. Like why she was on edge all the time.
âHas it always been like that?â he asked.
Toni kicked a twig off the sidewalk with her shoe. âNot always, but for long enough. Ever since ...â
She paused as she seemed to rethink what she was going to say. âJust a really long time.â
Adam wasnât quite sure how to respond. He didnât know much about Toni. She was Treyâs sister, and he had been best friends with Trey for almost four years. You would have thought they would have met at some point during that time. But Adam had come to realize that Trey and Toni lived extremely
