her Lucky’s name, and surely if Katherine had mentioned his name an instant red flag would have gone up and Secret would have questioned it.
â€œI guess you’re right,” Secret admitted. But she wasn’t letting her sister off the hook that easily. “But what about after you did put two and two together? You didn’t come running to see about me. For all you knew I could have died in jail, both me and my baby.”
Katherine cast her eyes downward. “I’m sorry, See-See,” she said, calling Secret by the nickname she called her when they were little girls. “I had a warrant out for beating the ass of my so-called best friend. I found out she had been kicking it with Lucky for a while now.”
Thank goodness Secret had already thrown up that hotdog. She’d probably have thrown it up anyway finding out that while Lucky had been with her, he’d been with a million other women at the same time. Perhaps she needed to go back to the free clinic for GP alone.
â€œSo Lucky was seeing both you and your best friend while he was seeing me?” Secret didn’t just want clarification. She was fishing.
â€œSecret, Lucky is a man whore. No telling who all he was seeing.”
â€œSo why did you even come pick him up that day if he was such a man whore and had been cheating with your best friend?”
Katherine opened her mouth but no words fell out. She thought for a moment and finally spoke. “I don’t know, Secret. I’ve been fooling with Lucky for years. It’s like he has this hold on me. He always said and did the right things, so I just kept going back to him.” She shook her head. “I know, just stupid.”
â€œSo I take it you’re with him now,” Secret said.
â€œOh hell no,” Katherine was quick to say. “I’m here with my girl, Taneshia.” Katherine let out a brief chuckle. “She’s actually my best friend whose ass I had to beat. She just dropped the charges against me two days ago, so everything is good. We realized that our friendship wasn’t worth losing over Lucky. Lucky is going to be Lucky. He is going to continue to play chicks and live the street life until the day he dies. The same way I had gotten caught up for years, so had Taneshia. I couldn’t fault her for that. Besides, after what Lucky did to you . . .” Katherine paused and then continued. “If he can watch the woman pregnant with his own flesh and blood be carted off to jail for some dope he was holding, shitttttt, no telling what that nigga would do to me.”
Secret was a little surprised to hear Katherine call Dina Lucky’s flesh and blood. She was sure he would have told her the truth: that he wasn’t the actual biological father. He was just claiming the baby for Secret’s sake. Secret had shared with Lucky all the details of how her baby was conceived. Clearly he’d decided to keep that to himself.
â€œSpeaking of the little one . . .” Katherine pointed to the stroller. “Is that the baby right there?”
Secret turned and smiled, then nodded proudly.
â€œOoooh, I want to see auntie’s baby.” Katherine’s attention immediately went to the stroller where she looked around for the opening. “How do you open this thing?” No sooner than she posed the question had she figured it out. She unzipped the hood of the stroller and peeked in at the baby.
Dina’s eyes were open and she was looking around. The pink bow atop her head full of hair was twitching right along with her head.
â€œIt’s a girl. I have a niece,” Katherine said. “And she’s sooooooo beautiful.” She looked up at Secret. “Girl, she looks just like you.” She looked back down at the baby. “Thank God she doesn’t look a thing like her daddy.”
â€œYou can say that again,” Secret said under her breath.
Katherine made a fuss over Dina a
