that. It wasn’t like she purposely didn’t give him something different to drink. She had yet to go food shopping.
Joy dozed off after another half hour of trying to make sense of Wayne’s bizarre behavior.

Chapter Twenty-Five

When Joy woke up the next morning, Wayne was gone. He didn’t leave a note or nothing. Disappointed, she got out the bed to take a shower. A deep sadness filled her heart. Today was her nineteenth birthday and she wanted to spend it with Wayne. She didn’t have a number where she could reach him.
She sucked her teeth as she thought about how Wayne could just leave without saying anything to her. After she finished drying off, she changed her sheets. She was about to lay down again, when her phone rang. She looked down at the display screen and saw the same number that someone been calling her from for the last three days. Opening her phone, she answered just as the call was about to go to voicemail.
“Hello.” she answered. No one said anything.
    “Hello.” she repeated.
She waited, listening to see if she could make out any background noises. She closed her phone and laid back on her pillow. For the last three days, whoever was calling her would call at the same time. They wouldn’t say anything they would just listen.
Rolling over on her side, preparing to go back to sleep, her phone rang again. She opened her phone and answered, “Hello.”
“Was sup?” she heard Wayne asked.”
“Nothing. Why you leave like that?”
    “Like what?”
“You didn’t even wake me up to say bye. You just rolled out.”
    “Yeah I know.”
“You know? That’s all you got to say?”
“I’m will call you right back.”
    “Wait a minute.”
    “What?”
“Today’s my birthday and I want to do something with you.”
“Aight. We can do something later. I’ll call you.” He hung up, not allowing Joy to fit in another word.
Joy closed her phone with a huge smile on her face. She found something to wear and laid it out on her bed. She put on a clean pair of pajamas, opting to wait to later to Wayne called back to get dressed. She went out into the living room to watch TV, to pass the time. She watched judge shows the rest of the day. She had the phone right by her on the armrest. Wayne never called. It was starting to get dark outside.
She felt so stupid for allowing him to treat her this. He lied to her. “He probably had a wife or something. What other reason would there be for the way he acted and for him not to give her his number?” She was going to ask him for it to see what he says.
After turning everything off, she went into her bedroom. She pushed the clothes on the floor and got in. She couldn’t fight the tears that were streaming down her face. She tried to hold in the noise but the sobbing noises escaped. She pressed her face into the pillow and screamed at the top of her lungs.
She cried the rest of the night. In the morning her eyes were stuck together and her head pounded from lack of sleep. The sadness in her heart weighed her down. Why can’t I ever be happy ? She wondered what excuse Wayne would use this time. She would have to stay in the dark because she made up her mind that she wasn’t going to talk to him no more.
Despite everything that’s happened since she met Wayne, she was starting to fall for him. By his actions, she knew that he couldn’t feel the same. She knew that if she allowed herself to talk to him, he would give her some bullshit excuse that she would fall for.
While in the bathroom brushing her teeth, she heard someone at her door. She stood in the doorway and listened to Wayne talk to her through the door.
“Joy. Joy. I know you’re in there and I’m not going nowhere till you talk to me.”
She rinsed her mouth and walked to the door. She looked out the peephole and her only thought was how sexy he looked in his jeans, shorts and wife beater.
Joy went against the voice and her head telling her no and opened the door.
