whatever she dished out. I didn’t leave unscathed by her rant, but she was compassionate about my bruised dignity. Riven just had to rub the salt into my wounded pride once I joined Derrick and him in the lobby. I guess his new nickname for me is “Miss Kitty.” Thanks for the reminder moron. Like I could ever forget. I noticed Derrick shoot Riven the stink eye and he idly rubbed the back of his head. As the instructor, Cara had to make sure I was alright after I ran out of her class. When Layla blurted out what happened, Cara could barely contain her laughter and couldn’t even look me in the eyes. She patted me on the back and reminded me to wear the spandex shorts next time. Scuttling down the hallway and closing herself off in her office, I swear I heard her burst out laughing.
Derrick and I say our goodbyes to Layla and Riven. They decided to go shoot some pool and get a few drinks. The guys live in a newer townhouse development about two towns over from the gym. Holding hands for the whole ride over and just being with Derrick makes me happy. I’ve missed him this week and I just want us to spend some quality time together.
His townhouse is three floors. The bottom floor consists of a storage room and garage entry. The main level is an open concept living room, dining room and kitchen combo, decorated in earth tones of browns, greens and cream colors. The large brown microfiber sectional is centered in front of a gorgeous slate fireplace with a 65” plasma screen TV mounted over the mantle. It’s a bachelor pad, although the color scheme gives the place a warm, homey feeling. There are a few pictures of family members scattered here and there as well as few of Derrick and Riven when they were younger. It’s nice that they have been friends for so long. I’m assuming the bedrooms are on the third floor; not confirmed but I suspect I’ll find out soon enough. Derrick quickly makes a call to order our pizza and we playfully argue over what movie to watch. He’s in the mood for some-blow-them up action movie and I’m more interested in something funny. After this evening, I need to laugh about something that’s not at my expense. We agree on
‘Ride Along’
starring Kevin Hart and Ice Cube. Derrick throws his arm around my shoulders and pulls me into to his side, snuggling me down next to him. With a quick peck on my forehead, we start the movie and wait for our pizza.
About half an hour later the doorbell rings. Derrick pauses the movie and leaves me to pay the delivery person. The smell of fresh basil, melted cheese and tomatoes is making my mouth water.
“Come on, sweets, have you ever had margarita pizza?” I shake my head no. “Well, you’re in for a treat. Let’s eat.” Derrick takes the large, flat, white box over to the kitchen island where I left my purse, grabs a few paper plates from a cabinet and starts dishing out the slices. “Can you get us some iced tea from the fridge? Glasses are in the cabinet to the left of the sink,” he says, gesturing to the cabinet. I scramble over to the kitchen, locate the glasses and grab the pitcher of iced tea. Once we’re all set, we carry our plates and drinks back to the couch and resume the movie.
“Oh, this, this is awesome. The fresh mozzarella and the fresh tomatoes are delicious!” I gush over the taste as I take my first few bites. Derrick just chuckles over my reaction.
“Yep, once you’ve tasted margarita, every other pizza pales in comparison.” Devouring his two slices, Derrick shoots me a cheeky smile and wink. I’ve become a fan of this pizza. We sit quietly, chewing and watching our movie. While laughing at a funny part and taking a bite, I feel a glob of sauce fall on my chin. I look around for a napkin and that’s when it dawns on me we forgot to bring them from the kitchen.
“Derrick, can you run and get me a napkin?” I ask, trying to staunch the flow of sauce with my hand. Glancing over at me, he sets his plate down on
