their turkey before it’s too late. Plus ever since I got this assistant manager thing, I have to work almost as twice as hard than I did before,” she said. Tony smiled.
“ Wow,” he said.
“ I know. But the good news is that working holidays and weekends pays more,” Desiree said.
“ Amen to that,” Rochelle said as she took a sip of her coffee.
“ Did Cynthia leave already?” Desiree asked.
“ Actually, she was gone by the time I woke up. I think she had an early start at the café,” Rochelle said.
“ Or…” Tony started to say before Rochelle giggled, interrupting him.
“ Really, Roch? How old are you?” Desiree asked. Tony smiled.
“ I thought I was the only one who saw that side of her,” he said.
“ Unfortunately for us, we have all seen it. Part of her never really grew up,” Desiree said as she took the final bite of her pancake. Tony laughed.
“ Don’t worry babe, I love you just the way you are,” he said. Desiree quickly finished her coffee before standing up to put her dishes in the sink. “What’s the hurry? Aren’t you early?” Tony asked as he looked at his watch.
“ Yeah Dee, it’s only seven-thirty,” Rochelle said.
“ If Cynthia is at the café, I need to pass by because I don’t think I’ll be coming back here tonight,” Desiree said.
“ Taylor’s?” Rochelle asked.
“ No his brother,” Desiree said rolling her eyes. “Of course, Taylor’s place. Where else would I be going?” she asked. Rochelle giggled again. “Jeez, woman, you need to quite that giggling thing,” Desiree said as she took a bottle of water from the fridge. Rochelle looked at Tony and smiled. Desiree shook her head. “You know what, I better get out of your hair. Whatever is going on here, I want no part of,” she said as she walked towards the door.
“ Have a good day,” Tony said smiling at her.
“ I have a feeling you will have a better day than I will,” Desiree said before she walked out. “Will those two ever get out of their honeymoon state?” she wondered as she went down the stairs. She flagged down a cab and headed to the café but just as she had thought, Cynthia was not there. The café was not even open yet. She knew that things between Cynthia and the new guy were progressing well but clearly, they were going even better than she thought.
She got back in the cab and headed to the store. As she rode, she sent a text to Cynthia. For some reason, she always felt like a parent to Cynthia and Rochelle. Checking up on them was just something she did without even realizing that she was doing it. When she got to work, she took a long deep breath and paid the cab driver before getting out. Her day had begun. The day ahead was one she had chosen to compress down to six hours and considering this was a pre-Black Friday, doing inventory on the same day was just going to make things a little bit more difficult.
By the time the clock struck twelve, Desiree was exhausted. She was seated in the back office finishing up with inventory when Taylor called her.
“ Hey, beautiful. How is your day coming along?” he asked when she picked up.
“ These people don’t pay me enough, Ericson,” she said as she leaned back in her chair.
“ Tired, huh?” he asked.
“ Exhausted is more like it,” she said. “How is your day?”
“ Long, boring. I miss you,” he said. She smiled and shook her head.
“ Really? It’s been a few hours since we last talked,” she said.
“ Yeah, but it’s been months since we spent the weekend apart. This sucks,” he said.
“ Ericson, are you horny?” she asked.
“ If I say yes, will you come over right now?” he asked.
“ Well, it depends. If you can wait a little longer I will make it worth your while…after you give me a massage of course,” she said. She heard him laugh.
“ Fine,” he said. “I’ll swing by to pick you up in a couple of hours,” he said.
“ Can’t wait,” she said before she hang up.
