she?â
Jennaâs eyes go icy. Her cheeks burn. âYou should know,â she says. âYou canât do anything either. Except for say mean things about my family behind my back.â
Brooke rolls her eyes. âThat again? For your information, Jenna, I didnât say mean things. I said true things. And I didnât say them behind your back. I said them to your face.â
âWhat did she say?â I ask Jenna when she turns away from Brooke.
âYeah, tell us,â Dominic chimes in. âI could use a laugh.â
âFighting with your friends isnât funny, Dominic,â Stacey puts in. She glances at me and away again. âEspecially your best friends.â
â Former best friends,â Jenna grumbles, shooting a look at Brooke.
âFine,â Dominic says. âTell us what Brooke said, Jenna. I promise not to laugh even if itâs funny.â
âYouâre the last blabbermouth I would tell, Dumb inic,â Jenna replies. âThe whole school would know by the end of recess.â
Dominic makes his face go all serious. He puts his hand on his chest like heâs getting ready to say the Pledge of Allegiance. âWhatâs said in the friendship circle, stays in the friendship circle.â Then he leans in and nudges his glasses up a notch. âGo on,â he says to Jenna. âSpill it.â
Stacey leans in too.
So do I.
Jenna looks from Dominic to me to Stacey. Her eyes narrow. âI donât share classified information with the enemy .â
âIâm not your enemy,â Stacey says. âBrooke is. Iâm just one of her troops.â
âYeah,â I add. âIf you and Brooke stopped fighting, we all would.â I glance at Stacey. âAt least, I would. Randi too, I bet.â
Stacey fidgets and fiddles with her needle and thread. âMeeka and Jolene would too. They told me so this morning.â
Click-click-click. Mrs. Morgan walks up to our friendship circle, smiling. She has the same smile as Brooke, only bigger.
She rests a hand on Jennaâs shoulder, her fingers sparkling with rings. âWill you do me a favor, sweetie?â she says to Jenna. âRemind your mother that Iâll be stopping by tonight to pick up the file for the school carnival. I want to get things organized for a change. Oh, and Iâll need the paperwork for the auction too.â
Mrs. Morgan squeezes Jennaâs shoulder and smiles again. âCan you remember all that or should I write it down?â
Jenna squirms under Mrs. Morganâs hand. âI can remember,â she says.
Mrs. Morgan laughs lightly. âOf course you can, smart girl!â She clamps Jennaâs shoulder tighter and looks at Mr. Crow. âLetâs get this show on the road!â she sings. âSome of us have work to do.â
Mr. Crow nods, fanning the last of the papers on his desk. He motions to the other parents. âFeel free to pull up a chair next to your student while Mrs. Eddy explains how weâll proceed.â
Mrs. Morgan swaps smiles with Brooke. Click-click - click and sheâs at the reading corner. Click-click-click again and sheâs scooting a kidsized chair between Brookeâs and Rustyâs desks. She sits down and tugs her neon pink skirt toward her knees. Then she checks her watch, drums her fingers on the back of Rustyâs chair, and smiles at Mrs. Eddy. âReady when you are, Francine!â
Rusty inches closer to Joey.
Brooke smiles at her mother and folds her hands. She holds her head perfectly straight like she doesnât want her halo to slip off.
âYouâll find everything you need for todayâs sewing lesson on your desk,â Mrs. Eddy tells us. âThe needles are very sharp, so pleaseââ
âOuch!â Quinn sticks a finger in his mouth.
ââso please be careful not to poke yourself,â Mrs. Eddy continues.
âGood point,â
