heâs not available.â She closed her eyes again. She cleared her throat. âOh spirit of Doc Wheat!! We need your presence! There are people here who seek your knowledge.â
Again there was anticipation. Merlina huffed a little. âThis is unexpected. I almost always have success, especially when weâre so close to where he lived.â
âI agree,â Mary Ruth said. âThis close we ought to have a better connection. Are you trying to contact him in 4G? Maybe 3G is too slow.â
Merlina ignored Mary Ruth. âAre there any other spirits here who could help us? Someone who knows Doc Wheat?â
For the third time, silence settled into the room.
Merlinaâs shoulders started to sway back and forth. Her head lolled back. She moaned as though she were struggling with something. Then she jerked forward and slumped on the table, the side of her head lightly hitting the wooden top.
The women stared at her. Francine, who was seated adjacent, prodded her on arm. âAre you all right?â
Marcy rushed to her side. âShhhh. Sheâs in touch with a spirit. Letâs wait to see who it is.â
Alice sat up. âI just thought of someone Iâd like to contact. Iâd like to talk to my husbandâs mistress, Jake Maehlerâs mother. Iâd like to know why she thought it was a good idea to seduce my husband, and why she didnât tell him about his child. And Iâd like to know if she thinks I should take him back. Heaven knows, I want to, but Iâd just like to hear why this whole thing happened in the first place before Iââ
Alice didnât get any further. Merlina sat up and stared directly into Francineâs eyes. âItâs burning,â she said. âBurning. Now. And youâre responsible.â
âWhat?â Francine could see that Merlina wasnât really looking at her. Her dark eyes were vacant. Open, but vacant.
Merlina turned away momentarily to look at Charlotte. âAnd you know why.â
âWhy what?â Charlotte asked.
âWhy itâs burning.â
âNo, I donât.â
Marcy got up in Merlinaâs face. âWho are you?â
No response. âI said, who are you?â she repeated.
Mary Ruth put her hands on the table and pushed herself up. âThis is nonsense. Iâm going to get some water to drink.â
Merlina swung her head toward Francine again. âIn the end, that was what I wanted too, the water. And he gave it to me. But it had more in it than I thought.â
Francine tilted her head to the side. She thought of the vial William had been carrying when they found him on the creek bank. âWilliam? Are you William?â
Merlina gave no response.
âYou canât be William. Williamâs in a coma.â
âUnless heâs passed away since you saw him last,â Charlotte offered.
âWell, thatâs a happy thought,â Mary Ruth snapped.
âAt least Iâm trying to be helpful.â
âWhatâs burning?â Francine asked Merlina.
No response.
Francine gripped her by the shoulders. She got more emphatic. âWhatâs burning?â
Merlinaâs eyes rolled back in head. She pitched forward toward the table, but Francine had hold of her and stopped her from crashing onto it. Marcy grabbed Merlina and the woman began to shake uncontrollably. Between Francine and Marcy they lowered Merlina to the floor, where she settled into fetal position. Her shaking faded until it finally stopped.
Joyâs cell phone went off. Her ringtone was the âMarch of the Storm Troopersâ from Star Wars , so the noise was disconcerting. Joy answered it, running into the front room so as not to disturb the others.
âWhat just happened here?â Francine demanded from Marcy. âIs this a normal occurrence during a séance?â
âI donât know.â Marcy sounded frightened. âIâve only
