be physically fearless when trying new things, and sheâd come off often enough to get over any fear of falling she might have had.
But this was different. Breezy never stumbles, shethought uneasily. Isnât it kind of strange that he didâjust when I was thinking how perfect he was? Just when I was convincing myself that the whole Serena thing was a figment of my imagination?
âDo you want me to call the stable?â Jordan still had her phone in her hand. âOr should I get off and hold him while you catch your breath?â
âNo, Iâm good.â Nina checked her girth, then walked Breezy a few steps to make sure he really was okay. He seemed fine, so she swung back into the saddle. She forced a smile as she glanced over at Jordan. âIâll just tell Great-Aunt Serena not to let it happen again,â she quipped.
Jordan gasped. âDo you think Serena had something to do with this?â She didnât give Nina a chance to respond. âOf course she did! Duh, I totally shouldâve realized it myself. Oh, Ninaâthis is getting really scary now! What are you going to do?â
âDo?â Nina gave Breezy a nudge to start him walking. âIâm going to finish this trail ride, thatâs what Iâm going to do.â
âNo, Iâm serious!â Jordan urged her horse forward tocatch up. âYou have to do something about this Serena situation before it gets even worse. I mean, you could be in danger, you know?â
Nina rolled her eyes, trying not to shiver at her friendâs words. âWhat am I supposed to do? Call someone in to do an exorcism?â
âMaybe,â Jordan replied seriously. âOr maybe you need to look into this whole voodoo thing, you know? Maybe thereâs someone who could help you, like, banish Serenaâs evil spirit or something.â
Nina rolled her eyes again. âPlease.â
âNo, listen, this could seriously work.â Jordan stared at her. âIf voodoo is whatâs giving Serena the power to hurt you, maybe you need to fight fire with fire!â
âLetâs not get crazy here,â Nina said firmly. âIâm not hurt, okay? And Iâm pretty sure the whole Serena thing is all in my head.â
Jordan cocked her head. â Pretty sure?â
âTotally sure,â Nina corrected. âAnyway, like I was saying, I just found out sheâs buried in St. Louis Cemetery. I think Iâll go there and see her graveâmaybe talk to hera little, apologize for using her life for a silly costume.â She smiled. âPut my mind at ease. Psychology, not voodoo, you know?â
Jordan looked unconvinced. âI guess itâs worth a try. Do you want me to come with?â
âSure, that would be great,â Nina said. âI might not believe in ghosts, but itâs still kind of creepy being in a cemetery all alone.â
âNot that youâre likely to be alone at St. Louis,â Jordan pointed out. âYouâll probably be fighting hordes of tourists to get to Serenaâs grave.â
Nina laughed. âTrue. Come on, letâs get these guys back to the barn, and weâll head up there right away.â
Twenty minutes later, Breezy and Freckles were back in their stalls eating hay and the two girls were heading for the exit. On the way, they passed one of the grooms. He called out a greeting.
âWhere are you two off to?â he asked with a grin. âLooks like youâre in a hurry.â
âSt. Louis Cemetery,â Nina replied. âWe, uh, want to check it out. Um, school project?â
The groom glanced at his watch. âHope itâs not due tomorrow,â he said. âBecause St. Louis closes at three, and itâs past four thirty now.â
âWhat?â Nina traded a glance with Jordan. âAre you sure?â
âPositive. My brother used to be a tour guide there.â
âOh.â
