rich.â
âDid he?â Reede pulled his shirt off but his hands got stuck in the cuffs.
âHe did. He had that arrogant, bored look that comes from never having to worry about money.â
Reede stopped pulling on his cuff and gave his attention to what Sophie was saying. âSurely not everyone who can pay his bills is arrogant.â
âMaybe not,â Sophie said. âMaybe Iâm generalizing based on my recent experience, but the man in the bar looked bored rich.â
â âBored rich,â â he said and couldnât help smiling at her phrasing. He unbuttoned a cuff. âWas the man ugly?â
âNo. He was actually rather handsome. Not as beautiful as Russell, but passable.â
Reede smiled broader. âYou wouldnât like to go on a date with me, would you?â
Sophie was glad she was on the phone so he couldnât see her grin. After what Carter had said to her about her looks, it was nice to think a man did like her as a person. And Dr. Reede had never even seen her. That made her feel even better. âYes,â she said, âthat would be nice. When?â
Reede took a breath. âSaturday. In costume.â
âWhat?â
âWeâll have a date in costume. For Halloween. At a house owned by a friend of mine. Eleven. Weâll have lunch.â He knew his sentences were staccato, but he was so nervous he couldnât think clearly. âAfterward we can go to the McTern party. Itâs big. In costume.â
Sophieâs first thought was that this wasnât possible. She didnât have anything appropriate to wear, and she had work to do. But then she remembered that she was no longer supporting her sister and stepfather, so she could afford to have only one job.
âBad idea?â he asked softly in her silence.
âNo . . . I . . . I rather like it, but I donât have a costume. Maybe Kim has one in her closet.â
Reede let out the breath heâd been holding. âItâs all arranged. My cousin Sara will make anything you want. Any ideas on that?â
It had been so many years since thereâd been any frivolity in her life, that Sophie was having trouble adjusting to the idea. She and Carter had never gone to a party together. Heâd always said it was because he hated them and just wanted to be alone with her. At the time sheâd been pleased by what heâd said. Now she realized it was because he didnât want people to see them together.
âIâll match you,â Sophie said.
âWhat does that mean?â
âIf you go as Edward the Seventh, Iâll go asââ
âQueen Alexandra.â
âAbsolutely not!â she said. âIâll be Lillie Langtry.â
âYeah?â Reede asked, smiling. âSo how about Spider-Man?â
âMary Jane.â
âPapa Bear?â
âGoldilocks for sure.â
âIs she the one in the blue dress with the head-band?â
âThatâs Alice in Wonderland, and youâd have to go as the Mad Hatter.â
âI could do that.â
âWell?â Sophie asked. âWho are you going to be?â
âI think Iâll let my cousin Sara tell you. She makes costumes for all of us.â And she can tell me, he added to himself. What could he wear that would put Sophie in something red? And low cut?
Sophie was smiling deeply for the first time in avery long while. âYou have no idea what youâre going to wear, do you?â
Reede laughed. âI am caught! None whatever. Iâve had a very busy morning andââ
âDoes Sara know your sizes?â
âSix one, one eighty-five,â he said. âWhat about you?â
âFive three and youâd have to put me in a hospital before I told you how much I weigh.â
âThat doesnât sound bad. I know a placeââ He stopped as he remembered the circumstances
