of the day in a fog, torn between anger and depression. Jonas didnât want their daughters hanging around together, and while she could understand why he wouldnât want his precious Caroline with her teenaged Vampira, sheâd already imagined the girl bringing Skylar back to her.
She moved into the rental cabinâs bathroom and began taking her frustration out on the wheelchair-accessible, roll-in shower, scrubbing until her elbow and shoulder ached. Of all theâ
âMustâve been some meeting you had with Jonas. Whatâd she do this time?â Maura asked from behind her.
Rissa jumped, not having heard her cousin enter the bathroom, much less the cabin.
âSorry. I thought you heard me.â
Laughing weakly, she shook her head and shifted onto her hip, sitting on the floor outside the enclosure. âItâs not your fault. My nerves are shot lately. Plus I was too busy imagining what it would be like bashing Sheriff Taggert over the head with the toilet brush.â
âOuch.â
She gave her cousin a sour look. âDid you ever have one of those days when you wished youâd never gotten out of bed because things just keep getting worse and worse?â
Maura walked over to the toilet and lowered the seat before sitting down. âSpill it. Whatâd he say?â
âWait!â Grace called, hurrying into the bathroom. âI just finished my last session.â She laughed softly and sent Rissa a sympathetic look. âYouâd just have to repeat it all again.â
Smiling wearily at the two women who had fast become her very best friends, she told them of Jonasâs demand. âWhat am I supposed to do? Skylar finally befriends someone and look what happens.â
âTry not to worry about it too much,â Grace told her. âIf the girls are true friends, they wonât listen to him.â
âYeah,â Maura agreed. âTheyâll talk at school and be fine.â
âUntil Jonas finds out.â
Grace frowned. âMaybe heâll come around after he gets tired of listening to Caroline complain about not spending time with Skylar.â
âAnd if they do talk at school and Skylar drags Caroline into one of her messes?â
âCross that bridge when you come to it,â Maura declared firmly. âWhat else can you do? Worrying wonât get you anywhere.â
âWhat Iâm wondering is how Skylar took it?â Grace questioned, her expression contemplative. âDid she go ballistic?â
Rissa nodded. âHowâd you guess? She ranted and raved, but beneath it all there was something in her face, something that reminded me of how she used to be. She wasnât indifferent, and the news hurt. I could see it.â
âThen maybe this will make Skylar straighten up,â Maura added, her tone cheery but forced. âThat way they can hang around together.â
âMaybe.â Rissa got to her knees and turned on the shower to rinse it. âDid Seth or Jake say anything?â She could only imagine how wonderful it mustâve looked to have the sheriff on the ranchâs doorstep at dawn. She paused in what she was doing and caught Maura and Grace exchanging a glance. âWhat?â
âNothing.â Grace tilted her head to one side and leaned against the wall behind her. âReally. All they said was that they hoped everything was all right.â
âBut?â
Maura was the weaker of the two and couldnât hold her gaze. âI, um, think they might be a bit concerned with the California guests coming, but donât worry,â Maura continued when Rissa groaned, âeverything will work out.â
âWeâll help you keep an eye on Skylar,â Grace added. âBetween the three of us and the guys, sheâll be fine.â
Uh-huh. She wasnât so sure. âThey have every right to be concerned, you know.â Rissa fought back tears,
