recited.
Itâs like my life is flashing before me , Megan thought. One page at a time.
âHey, look, Brett!â Brooke said suddenly. âMegan glued your old online profile in here.â
Megan gasped as Brooke tore the page out of her notebook. âThatâs mine!â she pleaded. âGive it back.â
âLet me see.â Brett took the page from Brooke. âI have a sister. A dog.â He pinched his lips together. âYep. Thatâs true. But whatâs this other baloney-maloney? I act in the theater? My favorite color is brown? I donât remember that stuff.â
âAnd you love pepperoni pizza,â Megan added. âAt least, you used to.â
Brett folded the profile page in half. âIt all sounds familiar. But Iâm not that guy anymore.â He waved the printed paper at Megan and then stuffed it in his pocket. âIâm a B.â Brett laughed. âA Zom-B!â
The other Bs laughed with him.
âI want my notebook,â Megan said.
âNo,â said Brooke.
âNo way,â said Betsy.
âIt was in our room,â Brenda said. âFinders keepers.â
âGive her back the notebook.â Happy stood in the open doorway. The movie must have ended. âNow.â
âOr what?â Brooke said.
âOr I wonât do your project,â Happy replied.
Megan looked at Happy, relieved to see her. âI thought â¦â
âI know what you thought. And if you think Iâm so weak that these Ghouls can blackmail me, then you better rush down to the nurse and have your brain examined. I told you to do that, right?â
âYeah. You did.â
âWell? Did you?â
âNo,â Megan admitted.
âYou should.â Happy then turned to Brooke. âThe notebook. Now.â She held out one hand.
Roles had been reversed. The changes both Happy and Brooke had made when they came to Zombie Academy no longer applied. In this moment, Happy was the tough, popular girl sheâd been in middle school in New York.
âIf you want your Visitorsâ Day surpriseâ â Happy stared at Brooke â âyouâll give her the notebook.â When no one moved, Happy said, âYou need me. I know what you are up to.â
âHow â?â Brooke really was scared of Happy. Her pale skin seemed more translucent than ever. âWho told you?â
âIt all became clear once my parents informed me they were coming to the castle. Iâm smarter than you think.â Happy squinted. âNow, are you going to give Megan back her notebook, or should I tell Mr. Franko that I quit? You know Iâm only helping you because it got me out of PE. I hate shuffle ball. I can ask Mr. Jones for a different projectâ¦.â
Glancing at her shoes, Brooke handed Megan the ZA notebook.
âWeâre done here.â Happy rotated and left the room. Without looking at the Bs or Brett, Meganclutched her notebook to her chest and followed Happy into the hall.
âI donât understand,â Megan said. âAfter everything I said to you, you didnât have to help me.â
âI know.â Happy stared hard into Meganâs eyes. âDo you still think I helped them steal the cure?â
The vials were in a crate in the room next door. The Bs had definitely taken them, but Megan wasnât sure who else was involved. Was Mr. Jones? Was Happy? Meganâs hesitation was answer enough for Happy.
âThatâs what I thought.â she said. âHave a pleasant night in the library.â
It was four days before Megan had another chance to sneak into the Bsâ room. During that time, sheâd kept to herself and twitched with anticipation. She couldnât wait to get the vials. Sheâd go straight to Nurse Karen, get a shot, and be home two hours later.
Wednesday after classes, Mr. Jones announced that there was going to be an assembly near the
