to meetâespecially near water,â said Repro.
âPlenty of that around here,â said Ryan. âActually, weâve been thinking all this time that it came from someone in the city, but maybe itâs a threat from somebody here who knows about the Perdita file and this house. It might be just another attempt to frighten us away. There are only four days left until the deadlineâsurely if it was something dangerous, weâd know by now.â
âIt all started with this,â I said, picking up the Perdita file.
Repro flicked through it. âAnd whatâs this?â he asked, noticing the envelope stuck at the back and taking out the paper with the strange drawing.
âWe donât know,â I said. âWe all thought it looked a bit like a ghost,â I pointed out the strange shapes. âBut now Iâm inclined to think itâs just a scribble.â
Repro peered more closely at the old piece of paper, scrutinising it thoroughly.
âMmm,â he muttered. âIt reminds me of something. Something I saw a magician do. If you look closely, you can see fold lines in the paperâI donât mean all the wrinkled, crumpled bitsâI mean these straight lines here, where itâs been folded and unfolded a lot.â With a few deft movements, Repro folded the paper a couple of times and something happened. The lines now connected up, creating one shape.
âThatâs amazing!â I said. âNow it looks more like a piece of coral, with branches on it. Somebody wanted to hide this drawing,â I said. âWhy?â
Another one of Perditaâs secrets was staring us in the face, taunting us.
âCoral, you said?â said Repro, with the beginning of a grin. âDid I ever tell you that I lived in some speleological structures for a while?â
âSome
whats?
â Ryan asked.
âHe means caves,â said Boges, puncturing Reproâs overblown language.
âYes, well,â I said, âyouâve lived in some very unusual places. But why are you telling us this now?â
âThere must be caves around here, thatâs why. This reminds me of a cave system.â
âThe sea caves!â I cried. âThatâs what it is! Itâs a diagram of the layout of the caves!â
Boges grabbed the diagram from Repro. âYes! The caves that Curly is looking for! And he doesnât know the way inâbut we do!â
The thrill of discovery bubbled through my veins. Weâd unlocked another of Perditaâs secrets.
âAnd look,â Boges added, âwe were looking at it upside down before. Thatâs not an Mâitâs a W.â
âWindraker!â I yelled. âIs that where the Windraker is lying? Thatâs what Curly and his boss want! But weâre going to get there first!â I was jumping out of my skin with excitement. I couldnât wait to start exploring the cave system.
âI doubt it, Winter,â Boges said, shaking his head. âNo ship could fit in through the narrow entry to the caves.â
âHang on! Whatâs a Windraker?â asked Repro, looking bewildered. âHave I missed something?â
We quickly filled Repro in on everything weâd heard about the shipwreck that lay somewhere in Deception Bay.
âWhatever is hidden in the caves,â Boges said, âit must be very important. Otherwise why would someone hide it with that fancy folding paper trick? And whatever it is, itâs hidden right at the very back of the furthest and biggest cave.â

One by one, the three of us squeezed through the narrow cleft hidden by the overhang of the cliff, carrying our gear. Repro had chosen to stay behind, allegedly to guard Perdita from any further intruders.
Boges had helped Ryan make waterproof lights by sealing our torches in tall airtight jam jars with ropes attached to them.
