art or something. Apparently your girl has management and organization skills, says she wants to throw together an exhibit for Liza. It would be the first one in Shifter Grove. You two getting serious?” Rake asked, dropping down on his haunches and taking a swig of his beer.
    Diesel nodded, unscrewing the water.
“We are,” he said noncommittally, though he couldn’t hide the smile on his lips when he said it.
“Okay. Then I think I need to tell you something. The thing with Blade and his crew? They went on trial regarding their illicit activities in Los Angeles. Warren somehow managed to keep her name out of it. Apparently someone owed him a favor. But I gotta ask, man. Do you know about her past?”
Diesel sobered for a moment. He took a sip of his drink, keeping his dark eyes on Rake. Then, he smirked.
“You mean that she used to be a cat burglar and that she knew what Blade was doing? I know, yeah.”
“And it doesn’t bother you?” Rake asked, raising his brows.
Diesel knew his friend meant nothing by it and was just looking out for him. And if anything, he knew Rake had done enough sketchy stuff in his life to be the last one to judge.
“Not one bit,” Diesel replied, just as Sonya walked up to them from behind.
“What doesn’t bother you, soldier-boy?” Sonya asked, walking straight to him and smacking a kiss on his lips.
“Whoa. That’s my cue to get out of here. Come out back when you two are done, I’m about to throw the steaks on the grill. I think Deacon and Aubrey are going to be over in a bit too. I bet she’d love to help out with the finances on that little show you were discussing.”
Rake tipped his hat and disappeared behind the mountain of firewood. Diesel slipped his hands around Sonya’s waist and pulled her to him, laying a kiss on her lips and then one on her cheek.
“Well, spill,” she urged, smiling softly at the attention he was showering on her.
He couldn’t keep his hands off of her. She’d been staying with him for a few months now, and every day that passed saw them growing closer and closer. Diesel had never felt anything like it – it was as if she were meant to be with him. In private, he’d thanked Rake at least ten times by now for being his usual mischievous self and hooking Diesel up with the mail-order bride ad. Without it, he was sure he would never have met this beautiful, intelligent and vivacious woman.
“He was just making sure I knew what I was getting myself into,” Diesel said with a grin, noticing the purr that hit his tone when he said it.
This woman made him purr. And he didn’t even mind. Hell.
“And do you?” she teased, brushing her hands through his hair as she sometimes did.
He leant into the touch eagerly.
“Well, I hope so. And if I don’t, I think that’s probably for the best.”
He gave her a look, and she made a face, sticking out her tongue. Diesel kissed her quickly before she could retract her tongue. Damn she was cute. And she was all his. Or at least, was going to be. It seemed like a good of a time as any, and he’d been carrying it around with him for a week now. Diesel fished out a small red box from the back of his pants. Without a further word, he got down on one knee in front of her and opened the box.
It revealed a simple golden band with a perfect black opal surrounded by small emeralds. It had belonged to his mother and, as tradition, moved on in the family via first-born sons. His mother had always told him there was a bit of magic to that ring, and he hoped it would mean good things for him and Sonya. Hell, even if it didn’t, he was pretty sure he could overcome any bad juju with Sonya by his side. Hadn’t he already dealt with his ghosts from the past?
“Sonya Blackpaw. Will you do me the honor of being my bride? I’ll promise to tell you everything, always. And I will promise to never let anything happen to you. You’re mine and I am yours.”
His voice didn’t shake at all. There was
