Marnieâs business who her brother slept with, especially now that Carter was a free man and no longer bound in matrimony to Marnieâs best friendâand she very much doubted that even if Marnie knew about what theyâd spent the night doing together she would make a fuss. She was far too mature and pragmatic and, well, polite for that.
But sleeping with Marnieâs big brother again suddenly felt hopelessly tacky and immature.
It wasnât exactly a great way to restore Marnieâs trust in her as a person and as a friend.... Nor would it do much for Marnieâs already rocky relationship with her brother. Which Gina knew had been set on its current course as a result of their first indiscretion ten years ago.
âWhatâs the matter? Is it the panties?â Carter asked, then reached for the hotel phone. âDonât sweat it. Iâll order you a new pair.â
âNo, donât, itâs not that, itâs...â She blinked at the tattered lace now resting on her big toe. Her stomach began to feel tight and achy, the way it always had in the past when sheâd gone too far. She put her hand up, to stop him dialling the concierge. âMarnie will be there, at the boutique.â
âYeah, I know.â He didnât look remotely surprised or concerned as he placed the handset back in its cradle. âYou said the Awesomes. Thatâs what you guys used to call yourselves, right? You and Marnie and Reese and the mousy geek girl.â
âCassieâs not a geek, sheâs just brilliant, and, considering sheâs about to marry Sam âTuckâ Tucker, the football player, Iâd say mousy is the new hot.â
And theyâd called themselves the Awesome Foursome, because their friendship had been Awesome. Awesome for her at least. Until that year in college, sheâd never had any close female friendshipsâher mother had died when she was so young she didnât remember her and sheâd always seen the other girls at school as competition. But during her year at Hillbrook sheâd come to realise how important female friendships could be. And then sheâd gone and torpedoed it.
But she wanted it to be Awesome again. Truly awesome. And that meant regaining Marnieâs trust. But how could she do that, if Marnie found out about her and Carter?
âThe NFL quarterback?â Carter gave a low whistle, sounding impressed. âStill waters, huh?â
âYes, precisely,â she muttered, gathering her clothes to her breasts again, when Carterâs gaze dipped noticeably.
âDamn, are you sure youâve got to run off? How about I text Marnie, tell her youâre going to be late?â
âNo!â she yelped, she actually yelpedâas all the blood headed out of her brain and exploded into her heart. âYou canât do that.â
The crease on his brow became a furrow. âWhy not? Iâve gotta arrange to meet her some time this week anyhow.â The sexy smile returned as he reached for the hem of her dress, gave it a playful tug. âAnd itâd give me time to order you up some new panties. And help you wash your hair.â
She yanked the dress out of his fingers. Was he completely insane? âYouâre not telling Marnie about this. About us. About last night,â she clarified when he continued to look at her as if sheâd just sprouted an extra head. âYou canât.â
âWhy canât I?â
âBecause I donât want her to know, obviously.â
âObviously. my butt. Why donât you want her to know? Itâs not like she doesnât know I have sex,â he added, apropos to absolutely nothing.
âYes, but she doesnât know youâve just had sex with me, does she?â
âNot yet, she doesnât.â He grasped her hand, dragged her back towards the bed. âBut I donât plan to keep it a secret. Why would
