her eyes at her friend. âIâll have to get over to the house and reintroduce myself.â
âSo you donât hold it against her?â Sharon asked, obviously relieved. âThat her sister and grandmother tried to destroy your husbandâs family? That they perpetuated the curse?â
âNo, why would I?â Gabrielle said. âShe didnât have anything to do with it.â
Clara smiled, so pleased at the friends sheâd made, their wisdom and openmindedness.
âSo if she and Jason got together, a Corwin and a Perkins,â Sharon pushed, spelling things out, âyou really wouldnât care?â
âIf she made Jason happy, Iâd be all for it!â Gabrielle announced.
Sharon nodded. âGood, because I really want her to be accepted while sheâs here. I didnât want anyone to hold what her family did against her.â
âWell, she wonât get that kind of treatment from us,â Gabrielle promised.
âI agree,â Amber said. âOf all people, I know what itâs like to try and outrun past mistakes.â
Clara smiled. Yes, Amber would understand. Sheâd met Mike Corwin in Vegas, married him on a whim and abandoned him before he even woke up the next day. Sheâd had her reasons, but sheâd spent a long time making up for her choices and still hadnât forgiven herself completely, even though her husband had.
âAs long as Jason is happy, thatâs all we care about,â Amber said. âSo does she make him happy?â
Clara, whoâd been content to let the other women speak, decided it was time she added her two cents. âShe makes him more than happy. I think sheâs his destiny.â Finally sheâd admitted aloud what sheâd been keeping inside since the day of the tarot reading.
âNow thatâs a mouthful,â Amber said, her eyes wide.
âTell me about it.â Claraâs biggest problem wasthat Jasonâs chance for happiness reinforced Edwardâs greatest fear.
âWhat do you mean you think sheâs his destiny?â Gabrielle asked.
Clara didnât want to push for this relationship when it would only hurt the man she loved. It wasnât that Clara was worried about whether or not Edward would eventually accept her love. If they were meant to be, then theyâd have a future together. But she knew that revealing her sense of inevitability regarding Lauren and Jason might trigger something in Edward that would lead to further regression or even breakdown.
Still, Clara believed in following the clues of the tarot to wherever they led. She couldnât keep this to herself. Not if the family could help.
âI did a reading for Jason before the festival and I saw her,â Clara said.
âSaw who? Lauren?â Sharon asked.
Clara nodded. âIn a sense. I saw a woman of mystery wearing a red maskâthe ultimate expression of undying love.â
Sheâd also seen the white picket fence and the potential for happily ever after. âA Corwin and a Perkins union would undo the past,â Clara said softly.
âI love it!â Amber said, her blond curls bouncing around her face as she practically jumped up in her seat.
Clara had expected Amberâs enthusiastic reaction, but she glanced warily at Gabrielle. An author who debunked the paranormal, Gabrielle had forged a mutual respect with Clara despite their differing beliefs. Gabrielleâs last work, written in the months following the fire, refuted the Corwin Curse and put forth other more logical explanations for all the tragedies that had befallen the family over the generations.
What Clara had just suggested was contrary to Gabrielleâs commonsense beliefs.
Gabrielle glanced down, then met Claraâs gaze. âI love the notion of Jasonâs happiness even if I donât believe thereâs a past to undo,â she said at last.
Clara smiled. âFair
