Brad-ectomy, if you must know.â
He chuckled. âA what?â
âI exorcised him. I have no further interest in him whatsoever.â
âReally?â
âYes, really.â Letâs move on to another subject . âArenât you cold just wearing a leather jacket?â
âYou asked me that earlier.â
âSo? Iâm asking again. The later it gets, the colder it gets, so I thought maybe youâre starting to get cold now.â
âYeah, Iâm starting to get there. Donât suppose youâd share the blanket.â
âNope. Iâve got it all warm and cozy inside.Besides, thereâs not room for the two of us in this chair.â
âYouâd be surprised.â
âJoe, look, youâre right. I came here because I wanted to be alone, to just think, so Iâm not very good company right now. I donât want to share my blanketââ
âHow âbout your hot chocolate?â
The guy sounded pathetic. I thought I could actually hear his teeth starting to clatter, and I could definitely see his breath on the air. I rolled my eyes. âSure.â
He took my mug and took a swallow. âJust what I needed.â
âYou can go inside,â I told him. âTurn on the fire, watch TV. You donât have to keep me company.â
âIâve got nothing else to do.â
We sat there in comfortable silence for several minutes. Then I peered over at him. âYou know Aunt Sue is too old for you.â
He laughed, a deep rumble that echoed over the deck. âI donât think sheâll ever be old. She has so much energy and so many great stories. I could talk to her all night.â
âSo why didnât you?â I asked. Even though I really wasnât interested in him as boyfriend material, I think I still wanted him to say that heâd left because of me, because heâd noticed I was gone, because he wanted to be with me. Selfish I know, but there you have it.
âShe got a little down after we were talking about Michael and left the party.â
I sat up straighter. âMichael? Whoâs Michael?â
âThe guy she almost married.â
âShe told you his name?â
He looked at me like Iâd gone crazy. âYeah. Why wouldnât she?â
âThis morning was the first time I ever heard about him, and she wouldnât tell me anything.â Aunt Sue and I were going to have to have a serious sit-down. âWhy did she tell you?â
He shrugged again. âMaybe she likes me.â
âDid she tell you why she didnât marry him?â
âNo, but she did say that his pictureâs hanging somewhere in her store.â
I perked up a little more at that. âIâll break her down in the morning.â
âAre you going to work in the shop again?â
âNo, but Iâll go see her before I head to the slopes. Maybe I can convince her to show me then.â
âMaybe.â
But he said it like he didnât think I would.
âShe was just being her old mysterious self today,â I told him. âSheâll tell me everything tomorrow.â
âIf you say so.â He stretched out his long legs. âThe water in that hot tub sure looks inviting. Have you ever sat in it?â
âNo, Iâm only ever here in winter. Itâs too cold to use it then. I donât know why itâs not drained. Can you imagine trying to get from the tub into the house while youâre wet? Youâd turn into a popsicle on the way.â
âMight be worth giving it a try. Can you imagine what it would feel like if everything was warm except for your head?â
âIt would be weird.â
âYou think?â
I heard a high-pitched laugh, followed by deeper laughter. Suddenly the lights from Cynthiaâs condo poured onto her back deck, illuminating her and Brad as they stepped outside. She released an irritating
