“Where you been all night?” She hears a scratchy old voice come from a man in a thin, leather vest sitting on the front porch as he blows smoke out into the yard.

“What are you, my mother?” Jason asks as he gets off his bike before walking up the crumbling sidewalk towards the house.

She follows closely behind him, hesitating to reach out and hold the back of his jacket for comfort as he stops in front of the stairs.

“Who’s the girl?” The old biker asks, leaning over on his milk crate to look around behind Jason’s back.

“She’s going to stay for the rest of the night, if that’s okay with you.” He says, before lowering his voice into a whisper. “She was getting mugged by the Serpentines and I stopped to help her. They followed us back to her house. Scared ‘em off, but better safe than sorry.

“Trouble follows you like ducklings, Jason.” The old man says, lifting his burning cigarette up to his mouth to take another drag before pushing the smoke out of his nose. “Time to keep you on a lease.”

“Gah, you know I don’t pick off more than I can handle.” He says, stepping up the stairs and onto the patio.

Lily shyly watches the old man nod before he leans back against the chipping siding.

“Yeah, yeah, you’re our pride and joy.” He jokes.

Jason smirks, looking back and winking at Lily before grabbing her by the hand and helping her up the crumbling concrete steps.

“Come on,” He says to her, over the rickety screech of the old door. “You’re probably cold and tired. Let’s get inside.”

She nods her head before following him through the front door and into the living room.

He pulls her past a group of leather clad men sitting on a ragged old sofa as they pound their shot glasses on the coffee table in front of them, hooting and hollering over the music playing in the kitchen.

Jason takes her down a dimly lit and dingy hallway before gripping the brass door knob on a stained white door and opening it up.

“I know we got some fresh sheets around here somewhere.” He says as they walk into the bedroom.

“Hopefully…” She jokes, half-heartedly as she wraps her arms uncomfortably around herself.

“Here we go.” Jason says as he opens a cupboard and pulls out a pile of linens and a thick, fleece quilt.

He hands them to Lily before tearing the bedding off of the bed and tossing it into the corner of the room.

“Sorry it’s so messy, but people don’t usually live here, you know?” He says as he takes a new, fresh sheet from her and walks back over to the bed before opening it up and tossing it into the air so it can float down onto the mattress. “It’s just a club house… sometimes someone’s old lady might clean it up all nice, but no one really cares.”

“I understand.” She says, walking over to the bed and letting the quilt and pillowcases drop onto the fresh sheet as Jason tucks in the edges. “And don’t worry about it. I’ve been some pretty seedy places in my day.”

“Yeah, is that why such a nice girl would be out so late? She’s out doing seedy things?” He smirks at her as he pulls the pillow case off of a flat pillow before replacing it with a new one.

She chuckles, doing the same, lifting a pillow and removing it’s fabric shell before sliding it into a new one.

“Yeah.” She sighs, stepping out of her flats and sitting down on the bed before lifting her knees to her chest and wrapping her arms around them. “Full disclosure, I’m a stripper, so it’s not like I was some good little girl who you rescued…”

“Hey, bad girl’s should be safe, too, don’t you think?” He chuckles as he slides himself out of his leather jacket before kicking off his boots and sitting down on the mattress.

He lays down on his side, propping himself up on
