didnât have Abigail . . . what if they were using Loganâs dad to steal something else?
Zoeâs phone vibratedâa text from her dad.
On our way home with Pelly. Who is in quite the wonderful mood. Batten down the hatches.
âOh dear,â Zoe said with a sigh. She did not particularly want to deal with the worldâs most passive-aggressive golden goose right now. But on the other hand, maybe that meant SNAPA had released Miss Sameera to them as well. Zoe was dying to sit the school librarian down and ask her a million questionsâlike who she followed to find Pelly. Whoever it was had to be the saboteur, surely. And if they caught him, theyâd be able to use him to stop the Sterlings. Zoe was still hoping it wouldnât turn out to be Loganâs dad.
âMy parents are on their way,â Zoe said, scrambling to her feet. âYou should go before they get here.â
âOr else with the awkward questions,â Jasmin said, nodding.
Or else with the kraken ink , Zoe thought. âLast chance for a delicious jackalope milk smoothie?â
âHa-ha, NO,â Jasmin said. âIâm watching you, Zoe Kahn.â She hesitated, and then threw her arms around Zoe. âAre we really friends again? This isnât a dream?â
âItâs real,â Zoe said, hugging her back. No matter what happened with the Sterlings, Zoe wasnât going to let anyone tell her she couldnât be friends with Jasmin again. âIâll tell you the whole awful story sometime.â
âSometime soon,â Jasmin said. They headed out of Zoeâs room and downstairs. Captain Fuzzbutt heaved himself up and tromped after them, making the entire house shake.
Blue looked up and smiled as they came into the kitchen. âGrilled cheese?â he said. âIâm putting seaweed in mine.â Marco was leaning on the island, wolfing down a sandwich already.
âSorry, I have to get home,â Jasmin said.
âOh.â Blue poked the plate of sandwiches with his spatula. âRight. Okay.â
She picked up the jacket sheâd left on the chair and glanced around at everyone. âI wish I could stay. I didnât even get to meet any dragons.â
âNext time,â Zoe promised.
Jasmin looked at Blue again. He gave her an awkward smile and went back to spreading butter on a slice of bread. âOkay. Bye.â
Zoe walked her to the door and gave her another hug. âRemember, donât say anything to anybody,â Zoe said. âEspecially your parents. Donât let them know you were here, or that you talked to me or Blue, orââ
âZOmygoodness,â Jasmin said. That was a phrase sheâd made up long ago for whenever Zoe was worrying too much. Zoe hadnât heard it in months, and it made her giggle even through her anxiety. Which was, of course, the point. âIâll call you soon, okay?â
âDefinitely,â Zoe said. She watched Jasmin walk away down the long drive and felt the weirdest combination ofsoaring happiness and bone-crushing dread.
She might have her best friend back. Maybe. She wasnât entirely ready to believe it yet.
But the Sterlings were out there, planning whatever they were planning, and if Jasmin was right, they needed to be stopped before Tuesday.
She went back into the kitchen and found Logan staring mournfully at the sandwiches and wearing what looked like about four long-sleeved shirts on top of each other. The top one was pumpkin orange, which was a nice color on him.
Thanks a lot, Jasmin in my brain .
âI donât think I can eat,â Logan said. âThe basilisk smell is stuck in my nose and itâs too awful.â
âYou should try, though,â Zoe said. âDid you ask your dad if you can sleep over?â
âMy phone is still drying out,â Logan said, pointing at the windowsill where his phone sat in a beam of pale
