can only control your own actions, and right now all of your movements need to be focused on getting you to where you want to be.â In and out of my dream, my momâs right. I need to keep it moving and get up out of here as soon as I can. This drama is giving me a headache and ultimately it has nothing to do with me.
âThere she goes again,â Sandy says, rolling her eyes at me. âRah, I donât want Jayd and her strangeness affecting my daughter.â
âSheâs our daughter and youâre the strangest one of all,â he says. I appreciate him defending me, but he shouldnât talk down about Sandy in front of their daughter. Thatâs not good at all. Maybe if I remove myself from the situation itâll be better for everyone and I can start right now. He was cooking breakfast initially and he can finish it. Iâve got to get ready for work. We can still make it by eleven, and thatâll give me a good six hours to make some serious cash.
âIâm going to take a shower and get ready for work. Can you still drop me off?â
âYeah, and Iâll take a look at your car when I get back. Just leave the keys with me.â
âCar? If you got a car why do you need dropping off?â Why is Sandy all up in my business this morning? We havenât had this much communication in years and sheâs wearing me out. Sheâs definitely from the same tribe of ashe stealers as my daddyâs folks, I swear.
âSandy, mind your business. Jayd, Iâm going to walk Rahima out,â he says, making it clear to me and Sandy that sheâs not a part of his equation, and I know thatâs not going to settle well in Sandyâs mind. No matter how many dudes she may roll with, I know in the end she only wants Rah.
I decide to take my time in the shower this morning to make sure the coast is clear of Sandy and her madness. By the time I finish getting ready, Sandy and Rahima are gone and Rahâs on the phone in deep conversation with someone.
âAlright, maâam. Iâll be sure to get you all of the info on Monday morning. Thanks again,â he says, hanging up.
âHey, is this for me?â I uncover the warm plate to find a breakfast fit for a queen, complete with orange slices. I love it when he cooks.
âBut of course. You need a healthy meal to start your day off right.â Rah steps behind me at the counter and reaches onto the plate, picking up an orange slice and putting it up to my lips for me to take a bite.
âThank you,â I say, nervously. Whenever he gets too close my body heat rises and this is not the time for it.
âWhat time you getting off?â Damn, I know heâs going to want to kick it with me tonight if he picks me up from Nettaâs, and heâll be hella suspicious if I say I donât need a ride.
âIâm not sure yet but Iâll call you when I find out.â
âYeah, and we have to get your phone switched over so maybe we can do that later, too.â Why is he all of a sudden making definite plans with me for the whole day? Whatâs really going on?
âSounds good,â I say, walking back toward the bathroom to make sure I didnât forget anything. Iâm so used to carrying around all of my stuff that itâs second nature to me by now to always do a once-over before leaving wherever I happen to be.
âThe attorney said I have a good chance at winning custody, especially with Sandyâs history.â I hope Rahâs right, for everyoneâs sake. If my dream is any indication of his reaction to losing Rahima again, I donât want to be anywhere around if it happens.
âI hope heâs right,â I say.
âBut a little backup wouldnât hurt.â
âOh no, Rah. Iâm not getting involved with this one,â I say. âThe last potion I made for you didnât take, and Iâm not trying anything else, especially not
