first, inside the clearings, and the wards afterward. That way an enemy couldnât get between the Urwalders and their means of escape. He and Elfwyn put separate, small wards around the Doorways, just in case an enemy figured out how to use the doorpaths.
âI just hope the wards are strong enough,â said Elfwyn.
âEven if they are, itâs no good,â said Jinx. The realization had been weighing down on him more and more as they walked.
âYou mean it wonât stop King Rufus the Ruthless from invading the Urwald,â said Elfwyn.
âYeah. Exactly.â
âBut itâll at least protect the people in the clearings,â said Elfwyn. âAnd theyâll be able to escape if they need to.â
âAnd then theyâll all come to Simonâs house!â
âAt least it gives us time,â said Elfwyn. âTo find out how the Bonemaster is draining the Urwaldâs power, and stop him.â
Jinx heard a crunch and looked up. Werewolves were moving through the trees, keeping parallel to Jinx and Elfwyn as they walked.
Jinx stopped. The werewolves stopped too.
âHi,â said Jinx.
The werewolves gazed at him.
âWe need to talk to Malthus,â said Jinx.
The werewolves grinned. Jinx could almost taste their hunger.
âCould you ask him to meet me at, um, at the edge of Bone Canyon tomorrowââ
âWe wonât be home by tomorrow,â said Elfwyn.
âThursday, then,â said Jinx.
The werewolves stood watching Jinx and Elfwyn with golden eyes. Jinx was sure they had understood him.
âAnd tell him weâll lend him the Eldritch Tome.â
The werewolves still didnât respond.
âPlease,â Jinx added.
One of the werewolves peeled away from the pack and trotted off into the forest.
âThanks,â said Jinx uncertainly. He and Elfwyn walked on, and the werewolves kept pace.
âYouâre sure theyâre on our side?â said Elfwyn, very quietly.
âYeah. Well, the Urwaldâs side, and they understand thatâs the same thing.â
âFor now,â said Elfwyn.
âYeah.â
âThey still make me nervous.â
âYeah,â said Jinx. âMe too.â
They both tried hard not to show it.
Jinx and Sophie stepped through the Doorway at the edge of Bone Canyon. Malthus was waiting for them in wolf-form, but slid up into a more human shape when he saw them.
Jinx could see the roiling clouds of terror enveloping Sophie, although they didnât show on her face.
âMalthus is all right,â Jinx told her. âOr, well, he kind of leaves suddenly so he doesnât eat you. Malthus, this is Sophie.â
Malthusâs golden eyes gleamed. âAh, Sophie the Scholar! This is an honor.â
Jinx was impressed by how calmly Sophie managed her first hand-and-clawshake with a werewolf.
âI have great respect for Samaran scholarship,â said Malthus. âItâs been years since Iâve really had a chance to sink my teeth intoââ
âSophie has some questions she wanted to ask you. AboutââJinx watched closely, in case Malthus suddenly attackedââthe Eldritch Tome.â
âYou have it with you?â The werewolf gleamed hungrily. Jinx braced himself in case he had to make a ward spell in a hurry.
âYes.â Sophie drew the slim blue book from her coat, pulled off her woolen mittens, and paged through it. âI was wondering about the balance of lifeforce and deathforce. If youâll look hereââ
Malthus leaned over the book eagerly. âAh, yes, I see. The Paths of Fire and Ice?â
âAre they real paths?â said Sophie.
âYou see this word hereââ The werewolf pointed and made a grating, snarly sound. âMeans âpaths.â They are real. The infixes mean âiceâ and âfire.ââ
âI know that,â said Sophie. âYou told Jinx
