car,â Jessie Belle stated. âBut I donât just think about me. Traynor, I want you to have a big church and be on television. The world needs to hear you preach, honey. I can see it nowâ¦you on the radio and on television just saving soulsâbringing them to the Lord. Just think how many people youâll reach.â
Traynor gave her an indulgent smile.
âWe can have those things, Traynor. I just know itâwe just have to step out on faith.â
âIf itâs Godâs willâ¦â
âGod doesnât just want us waiting around on Him. Sometimes He requires that we step out of our comfort zones and just trust Him. You said this last Sunday when you preached.â
Traynor grinned. âSo you were listening.â
She smiled in return. âOf course. Youâre my husband.â
âI thank God for you, Jessie Belle. It means a lot to me that you are so supportive. You make me feel as if I can do anything.â
âTraynor, you can. I donât believe God just called you to pastor a little church like Ninth Street Baptist. Heâs called you for greater opportunitiesâyou just have to recognize them.â
They spent a couple of hours together before Traynor left to run errands.
Jessie Belle could hardly wait for the weekend to arrive. She was excited about getting her very first car.
On Saturday afternoon, Traynor and Jessie Belle met with Atkinson at the Chevrolet dealership.
Three hours later Jessie Belle drove her car home.
When they ventured into the house, Jessie Belle noted Traynor seemed troubled by something.
âWhatâs wrong, honey? Are you worried about the car payment?â
âNo,â Traynor responded.
âWhat is it, then?â Jessie Belle sat down beside her husband. âI can tell somethingâs bothering you.â
âI appreciate everything Atkinson did for us today, but I have to be honest. I donât like the way the man looks at you. I was watching him todayâhe canât seem to take his eyes off you.â
âHoney, what are you talking about?â Jessie Belle laughed. âThat man probably watches every woman in the church. I can tell just by looking at him that heâs a ladiesâ man.â
Traynor eyed her. âJust be careful around him. We donât want him misconstruing your kindness for something more.â
âHoney, you can trust me,â Jessie Belle assured him. âI thought you knew that, but I guess I was wrong. Traynor, Iâm not some fragile little girl. I can handle these guys around hereâIâve been doing that since I got my first period.â
âJessie Belleâ¦â
âFor goodnessâ sake, Traynor, youâre only twenty-two years old. Donât be such a prude.â
Jessie Belle avoided any contact with Atkinson on Sunday morning before service began. She could tell he was trying to steal a few minutes with her.
After church, she was not so lucky.
He crept up behind her. âBaby, I held up my end of the bargain. Now itâs your turn.â
Jessie Belle pushed away from him. âHave you lost your mind, Atkinson?â she asked in anger. âKeep your hands off me! For goodnessâ sake, my husband is right down the hall.â
Atkinson shrugged in nonchalance. âI donât care. I want you for myself. Leave Traynor. Heâs not man enough for you.â
She turned to face him. âAnd you think you are?â Jessie Belle laughed. âYouâre kidding, right?â
âIâm dead serious.â
Jessie Belle sighed in frustration. âAtkinson, for the last time, Iâm not leaving my husband.â
âYou love me, Jessie Belle. I can see it in your eyes.â
âThis was kind of cute in the beginning, but now itâs annoying, Atkinson. I love Traynor . Go find Cynthia and just leave me alone.â
âNo,â he responded. âI donât love her.
