cards back in the metal tin. He got up off the floor in front of the couch and extended his hand. âCome on, cheater. Iâll help you up.â
Sienna accepted his help. âThanks. You know for someone who cheats, you arenât so bad.â
Sienna retrieved their glasses of water from off the floor as well. She placed them on the tray of snacks sheâd brought out when they had first arrived. Vaughn took the tray from her and headed for the kitchen. She followed him. âI can take care of that,â she told him after he opened the dishwasher.
âIâve got it.â
They tidied up and turned off the light. Sienna walked him back into the foyer.
âThanks for such a wonderful evening, Vaughn. I had a great time.â
He gazed down at her. âMe, too.â
âCall me when you get home. Ring once so I know you got there safely.â
âRing once?â he chuckled. âMy mother used to say that when weâd moved out on our own.â
âMy parents still do. So donât forget. Ring once,â she warned.
This time Vaughn didnât resist the urge to tweak her nose. âWill do.â
She opened the front door to let him out. She watched him until he had backed out of her driveway and drove down the quiet street. Slowly, she closed and locked the door. Turning out the lights, Sienna set the alarm then went upstairs. Tired, she rushed through her nighttime regimen. Once in the bed, she snuggled under the covers and stared at the ceiling.
Her day was simply fantastic. She smiled like a Cheshire cat when she recounted all the events. When the phone rang, she grabbed the receiver and hit the talk button. âHello?â
âWhy are you answering? I thought you just wanted me to ring once and hang up?â
She heard Vaughnâs amused voice in her ear. She laughed. âSorry, I forgot.â Without warning she hung up the telephone.
A few seconds later the phone rang again.
âHello?â
âYou are certifiably crazy.â
She burst out laughing. âGlad to know you arrived safely.â
âYep, I did.â
âWhat are you doing?â
âWatching the moon shine through the skylight above my bed. You?â
âThe sameâminus the skylight.â
âSo, which part of our outing was your favorite?â
Sienna was thoughtful for a moment. âHmmâ¦Iâd have to say you winning me Rocco.â
âExcuse me?â
âMy stuffed animal. I named him Rocco.â
âI see. So where is Rocco now?â
âRight next to me. Iâve got a King-sized bed so heâs got an entire wing to himself.â
Vaughn chuckled at that, but then grew silent. âIâd say he is one lucky bear.â
Siennaâs stomach lurched. Closing her eyes, she willed the lump forming in her throat to move. âYou know, something tells me if we donât say goodnight now weâll be on this phone till dawn.â
âSomething tells me youâre right. Goodnight,â Vaughn said, quietly. âIâm glad we gave the friend thing another try.â
She couldnât help the grin that stole across her face. âMe, too,â she admitted before hanging up the phone.
Chapter Ten
And So It Begins
Sienna was checking in on her flight when her cell phone rang. âSienna Lambert.â
âWhere are you?â
She smiled. âChicago. You?â
âSeattle,â Vaughn replied. âWe had a skittish client that was thinking about going to another agency. Linda insisted I come out here immediately to keep that from happening.â
âDid you convince them?â
âWeâll find out shortly. Right now weâre at Happy Hour going over how much more weâre going to do for themâfor less.â
âWell, if anyone can blow sunshine up someoneâsââ
âHey,â he interrupted.
âIâm just sayingâ¦youâre good at
