vicious and
had an incredibly bad temper, plus a penchant for being the best. Biggest
asshole on the planet, but damn can he run."
Brent piped up from his seat,
saying, "I've always bested the bastard and he cants stand me for it. He
broke records? I broke them faster. He made a touchdown? I made three. He laid
a gal? I had seven. He fucking hates me."
Sam clapped his dark hand on
Brent's shoulder. " The best thing that ever happened to our college team
was the day he was cut for failing classes."
"He got picked up by the
Blue Kraits the next year," Brent said, his face looking disgusted.
    Morgan nodded. Even though she
grew up with it, she knew very little about football. But she did know that the
Blue Kraits were the second best team in the league. The Caimans had a
long-standing rivalry against the Blue Kraits, and it seemed that the war
between their star running backs only helped to fuel the fire.
    "We're going to kick their
ass in two weeks, bro," Sam said, squeezing the back of Brent's neck.
But Brent did not respond. He
was nursing that awful-looking bruise, plus his regular aches and pains from
the game, and Morgan had a feeling that he was also soothing a cracked ego. Sam
walked off without another word and Morgan took her place next to Larson,
wrapping her thin, tiny arms around her massive, muscular boyfriend as she laid
her head against his shoulder. Neither of the lovers spoke, choosing instead to
sit in silence, cocooned inside the roar of the happy little bar.

    Chapter Fourteen

    One of Morgan's favorite places
in the whole world was Brent Larson's extravagant apartment. Before, she had
thought that her little one-bedroom place was nice, but it looked like dog crap
next to Larson's.
His place was at the top of an
apartment complex, and when Morgan went over for the first time, she was amazed
that the elevator opened up right into Brent's living room. His living room,
which was easily the size of Morgan's entire apartment, was decorated in
beautiful creams, golds, and clear glass. A huge television hung on one wall,
and next to it was a lighted display of every trophy and award that Brent had
ever earned. Just beyond that was two sliding glass doors that opened up to a
beautiful balcony with an amazing view of the city.
    Brent's kitchen was gigantic,
but Morgan quickly realized that he rarely cooked. He kept his fridge and
cabinets stored with sodas, water, sports drinks, and beer, as well as game-day
foods like chips and salsa, along with loads of jerky, tofu, beans, and other
proteins. Everywhere Morgan looked, she saw powdered protein shakes. After her
second or third visit, Morgan was delighted to find a bottle of her favorite
wine chilling in the fridge when she arrived.
The apartment ended up being a three-bedroom
place. One room was a makeshift gym that Brent would use in the mornings. The
second one was a beautiful office, complete with a solid red oak desk, a state
of the art computer, and plenty of space for Brent to conduct business meetings
or interviews.
But it was his bedroom that
really took Morgan's breath away. His bedroom featured a king-sized,
four-poster bed decorated in black and gold, another television with every new
gaming device attached, and a Jacuzzi next to a gas burning fireplace.
Morgan found that Brent did not
hang out in his apartment very much, and for the life of her, she could not
figure out why. Brent seemed to enjoy life more when he hit the gym every day,
or spent time at the bar with the guys. But the longer that they were together,
the more he loved to invite her over for a bit of alone time.
It was the Caiman's by-week and
Brent was home alone in his apartment when Morgan arrived. She brought Chinese
food and a six pack of Brent's favorite beer, and when the elevator doors
opened, she saw her boyfriend sitting on his cream-colored couch, watching a
game on TV.
    "Hey, baby!" she said
brightly, "I grabbed dinner."
    Brent looked over and
