winter.
The men stood on the deck of the boat. Then they saw a European man dressed in a white coat, but it wasnât made of sealskin. âHeyâwas that you shouting? Was that you sweeping ravens away?â a man said.
âYesâget off my ark,â the man in the white coat said.
âIs that what this boat is called?â
âYes.â
âWhatâs your name?â a villager said.
âNoah.â
âNoah,â the villager said, âyou canât blame ravens for coming around. Thatâs what they do. Ravens are curious. Every time a person paddles out in a kayak, ravens come by, to see if a fish is being caught or cleaned. They like the fish guts, for one thing. Theyâll squabble right on a kayak, if fish guts are seen. Gulls, too. They beg for food. Hey, heyâwhatâs that smell?â
âI have a lot of animals below deck,â this Noah said.
âNoah, what kind of animals, Noah?â a villager asked. âSeals, white bear, ptarmigan?â
âI donât know those,â said Noah. âI donât have those with me.â
âWhere is your family?â
âThey died.â
âDid any of the animals kill them?â
âNo.â
âHow did it happen, then?â
âOne by one, they jumped from the ark and drowned.â
âCome to our village, tell everyone what happened. Weâll find you a new wife. Itâs winter now. Youâll starve out here.â
âGo away. Iâm staying on the ark.â
âWell, can you eat the animals below deck?â
âI wonât. Go away!â
âNoah-no-family says go away,â a villager said. âAll right, weâre off to hunt seals, then.â
When they arrived at the seal grounds, they spread out and leaned over seal breathing-holes. Soon many ravens arrived. âWeâre curious about the ark,â a raven said. âWeâre all flying over to it.â
âWatch for Noahâs broom, itâs got sharp bristles,â a man said.
âWe heard about it,â a raven said.
The ravens flew to the ark. A villager said, âLetâs hunt seals a few more days. Then weâll go to the ark.â
They caught seals, lashed them to their sleds, then went to the ark. When they got there they saw ravens swirling about. Some had broom bristles in their beaks. âHeyâheyâNoah!â a hunter shouted.
âGet these birds out of here!â Noah cried. âI know you sent them!â
âWe told you ravens are curious.â
âGet them away from me!â
âGive us some planks of wood, weâll chase off the ravens,â a man said.
âAll right,â said Noah.
He pried off some planks. He dropped them to the ice. The hunters spoke to the ravens. Most of them flew off. âWe know what itâs like having too many visitors,â a hunter called up to Noah. âOne time all of my cousins stayed the winter, my wifeâs cousins, too. But we took them in. It was winter. They were hungry.â
With this, the hunters climbed up onto the ark. They started living there. They ate what animals they found on the ark. They liked the taste of some; they hated the taste of others. âThis is goodâthis isnât!â âThis isnât a bad place to live awhile,â one man
said. âYes,â another man said, âwe can visit our families easily, then come back out here. Thereâs unusual things to eat.â They settled in for a long visit.
Finally, Noah said, âIâll give you many more planks, go away.â
âNo,â said a hunter. âStop complaining. Weâre not poking you with knives, weâre not poking you with ice chisels, weâre not making you get rid of our dogsâ fleas. Stop complaining. Sit and eat a meal with us.â
Many days went by.
Some colorful birds flew off, but otherwise the hunters ate most of the animals
