do. Because you won’t be giving me blue balls. That won’t work for me.”
    Â
Kiara tossed and turned in bed that night. Rashad was late. And she felt afraid. Her anxious mind imagined all sorts of scenarios. She tried to contact him earlier but he did not respond.
    Just then Alexis texted her.

I have a personal emergency and will take a vacation day tomorrow.

Kiara wanted to text a response. But she accidentally waved her hand across the text, which caused her Android to automatically call Alexis. She tried to end the call, but couldn’t.
    â€œDamn. I hate this phone.”
    Alexis groggily answered. “Hello?”
â€œUm, sorry to bother you, but I’m responding to your message. Is everything okay?”
â€œEverything is great.” Alexis’s voice sounded muffled.
â€œOh, okay. I thought you said you had an emergency.”
â€œI do,” she gasped. “I am dealing with it right . . . now.” She sounded like she was gritting her teeth.
â€œLet me know if there’s anything I can do to help.”
She heard muffled voices. Alexis grunted, “Okay,” and hung up.
Kiara knew the sounds of sex when she heard them. And she reasoned that Alexis must have been with that man she’d alluded to having a while ago. “Good, I’m glad she’s getting some tonight. And it sounds like she’ll be getting some more tomorrow.”
Two hours later Rashad came home. Kiara was in their bedroom with her tablet doing some work. He thrust a small vase of roses at her.
â€œHere you go, babe. Just because.”
â€œAre you serious? Why’d you buy me these?”
    â€œThat’s what you wanted, right?”
â€œI wanted you to answer my calls when I tried you earlier. Why didn’t you call me back?”
â€œI did but your phone was busy. Or it went straight into voice mail.”
    â€œOh.”
    â€œYeah. So.”
    â€œBut why the flowers?”
    â€œYou’re my wife. That’s why.”
He planted a kiss on her forehead. Kiara felt conflicted. She compared Eddison’s kiss to Rashad’s. No fucking comparison. It seemed like life as she knew it was slipping through her fingers.
She had nightmares all night that Rashad caught her kissing Eddison. In fact, Kiara felt so troubled, she didn’t seem like her normal self.
At work the next day, Kiara took a bathroom break. She was standing before the sink when Shyla entered the restroom. Shyla took care of her business and when she emerged from her stall, she noticed her boss staring at the mirror. Water steadily poured from the spigot. A glob of soft soap sat in the middle of Kiara’s hand.
    â€œMrs. Eason? You all right?”
    Kiara did not reply.
    Shyla turned off the water.
    â€œMrs. Eason?”
â€œHuh, oh. Sorry. I-I’ve got a lot on my mind.”
    â€œIt’s okay, we all do.”
â€œHow are things going with you and—”
â€œWesley? My fiancé and I are good. We are impatiently counting down the days.”
â€œI can only imagine. I hope everything works out for you two. Hope that you are true soul mates and the life you want to share together will continue to grow and develop and that you receive every single freaking thing you want out of the relationship.”
â€œSounds like there’s a story behind this little speech.”
â€œSorry for the overshare. But I’m already where you’re trying to be. And let me tell you, marriage is very hard work. And sometimes we women get so caught up in the wedding that we completely ignore the relationship.”
Shyla put on her concerned humanitarian face.
â€œAre you and Rashad truly okay? Like, y’all still good, right? I mean, it’s not really any of my business. But I’m all about female empowerment. And if you ever need to talk—”
Kiara gave her an emotionless stare.
â€œI know you may not want to confide in me, but I
