do. Because you wonât be giving me blue balls. That wonât work for me.â
Â
Kiara tossed and turned in bed that night. Rashad was late. And she felt afraid. Her anxious mind imagined all sorts of scenarios. She tried to contact him earlier but he did not respond.
Just then Alexis texted her.
I have a personal emergency and will take a vacation day tomorrow.
Kiara wanted to text a response. But she accidentally waved her hand across the text, which caused her Android to automatically call Alexis. She tried to end the call, but couldnât.
âDamn. I hate this phone.â
Alexis groggily answered. âHello?â
âUm, sorry to bother you, but Iâm responding to your message. Is everything okay?â
âEverything is great.â Alexisâs voice sounded muffled.
âOh, okay. I thought you said you had an emergency.â
âI do,â she gasped. âI am dealing with it right . . . now.â She sounded like she was gritting her teeth.
âLet me know if thereâs anything I can do to help.â
She heard muffled voices. Alexis grunted, âOkay,â and hung up.
Kiara knew the sounds of sex when she heard them. And she reasoned that Alexis must have been with that man sheâd alluded to having a while ago. âGood, Iâm glad sheâs getting some tonight. And it sounds like sheâll be getting some more tomorrow.â
Two hours later Rashad came home. Kiara was in their bedroom with her tablet doing some work. He thrust a small vase of roses at her.
âHere you go, babe. Just because.â
âAre you serious? Whyâd you buy me these?â
âThatâs what you wanted, right?â
âI wanted you to answer my calls when I tried you earlier. Why didnât you call me back?â
âI did but your phone was busy. Or it went straight into voice mail.â
âOh.â
âYeah. So.â
âBut why the flowers?â
âYouâre my wife. Thatâs why.â
He planted a kiss on her forehead. Kiara felt conflicted. She compared Eddisonâs kiss to Rashadâs. No fucking comparison. It seemed like life as she knew it was slipping through her fingers.
She had nightmares all night that Rashad caught her kissing Eddison. In fact, Kiara felt so troubled, she didnât seem like her normal self.
At work the next day, Kiara took a bathroom break. She was standing before the sink when Shyla entered the restroom. Shyla took care of her business and when she emerged from her stall, she noticed her boss staring at the mirror. Water steadily poured from the spigot. A glob of soft soap sat in the middle of Kiaraâs hand.
âMrs. Eason? You all right?â
Kiara did not reply.
Shyla turned off the water.
âMrs. Eason?â
âHuh, oh. Sorry. I-Iâve got a lot on my mind.â
âItâs okay, we all do.â
âHow are things going with you andââ
âWesley? My fiancé and I are good. We are impatiently counting down the days.â
âI can only imagine. I hope everything works out for you two. Hope that you are true soul mates and the life you want to share together will continue to grow and develop and that you receive every single freaking thing you want out of the relationship.â
âSounds like thereâs a story behind this little speech.â
âSorry for the overshare. But Iâm already where youâre trying to be. And let me tell you, marriage is very hard work. And sometimes we women get so caught up in the wedding that we completely ignore the relationship.â
Shyla put on her concerned humanitarian face.
âAre you and Rashad truly okay? Like, yâall still good, right? I mean, itâs not really any of my business. But Iâm all about female empowerment. And if you ever need to talkââ
Kiara gave her an emotionless stare.
âI know you may not want to confide in me, but I
