all a blur.
âIs everybody all right?â I said, but Simone had gone. I moved my head with difficulty to see where she was and relaxed. She was at Michaelâs bedside.
The noise and light faded in and out, and I hoped with detachment that it was just exhaustion and nothing more serious.
Meredithâs face swam into view above me and she put her hands on either side of my face. Her exploratory energy moved through me. âEmmaâs fine, just exhaustion,â she said.
I grabbed her hand to stop her before she left me. âIs everybody okay?â I said. âThey shot David and Bridget because they were with us. Are they all right?â
She smiled and squeezed my hand to reassure me. âTheyâre fine; everybody will be okay. Close your eyes and rest.â
âDo you need my snake?â
âNot while youâre half-dead like this,â she said. âSo close your eyes, go down deep, rebuild your energy, and when youâre back you can help. Either way theyâll be fine; the injuries arenât life-threatening.â
âGood,â I said, and let go.
CHAPTER 6
I came around in my own bed in the servantsâ quarters. As soon as I sat up, Meredith and Simone appeared next to me.
âHow do you feel?â Simone said.
âGreat. Full of energy. How are the others?â
âTheyâre in the infirmary, theyâre fine,â Meredith said. âWeâve done some energy healing. With a few hoursâ rest theyâll be up and around again.â
âAny permanent damage?â
âNo,â Simone said. âBut we need to talk about Michael later. I honestly think heâs out of his league guarding you; he keeps getting injured.â
Meredith leaned in to study me carefully. âThatâs right, talk later. Right now, tell me: do you crave Shen blood? Do you want to taste it again?â
I thought about it for a moment, then shook my head. âNo. Not like I did when I had the demon essence in me. I have to admit that it tasted great, but I donât feel like an addict.â
âIt tasted great?â Simone said, incredulous.
âIt doesnât taste like blood at all,â I said. âRemember that drink at Nu Waâs palace?â
âThat was awesome.â
âThatâs what Michaelâs blood tasted like. Better than that, if possible.â
Simone hesitated. âI wonder if it tastes like that to me too.â
I was wearing my pyjamas. âHow long have I been out?â
âOnly a couple of hours,â Simone said.
âSo itâs what ⦠2 am? Why arenât you in bed?â
âI wanted to make sure you were okay. I donât have school tomorrow anyway.â
I found my tatty purple chenille robe in a pile of clothes next to the bed and pulled it around me. âGo to bed.â
âWhere are you going?â Meredith said.
âIâm going to check on the others.â
âTheyâre asleep, leave them,â Meredith said. âLeoâs there watching them. Theyâre fine.â
âItâs so cute: Clarissaâs asleep at Michaelâs bedside,â Simone said.
âI still need to check something out. You two go to bed.â
âCheck what out?â Simone said suspiciously. âItâs the middle of the night.â
âI want to see if the Murasame came back,â I said. âIt wonât come when I call. It only came when I did my strong thing.â
âYou havenât recovered enough to do any sword work,â Meredith said. âWhen did you call it?â
âThis evening, when the Mothers cornered us. I just want to pop down to the Armoury and see if itâs there. If it isnât, then Iâll need to get myself a new one, because itâs probably at the bottom of the sea somewhere, or back in Hell.â
âGo straight back to bed after youâve checked it,â Meredith said, and
