Travis.â
It shocked him how his heart raced, how exhilarated he was by the sight of her.
âIâm putting a chicken on to roast,â Nell said, her voice unmistakably nervous.
âLet me help,â he insisted and didnât give her a chance to object.
âYes, let Travis help,â Ruth murmured, sounding as if she was about to burst into laughter. âNellâs never cooked a chicken in her life.â
Nell marched into the kitchen with Travis following, and just the way she walked told him she wasnât pleased. âI donât need any help roasting a chicken,â she announced brusquely.
âI didnât think you did. I just wanted to talk to you.â
âIf itâs about Bitter End, thereâs nothing to say.â
âAt least explain to me why everyone reacts this way the minute I say the name.â
âI already have.â
âTell me again.â
âNo.â She paused. âBitter Endâs the only reason you came here, isnât it?â
âYes.â He wasnât going to lie.
âThen thereâs nothing to talk about.â
âThereâs everything to talk about.â
She stared at him, her expression wary.
âI want to know what it is about this ghost town that evokes this type of response. Donât you want to find out what caused everyone to leave? Arenât you curious?â
âI donât need to knowâno one does,â she said, then dragged in a deep breath. âYou donât understand.â
âThen explain it to me.â
âIâm afraid,â she admitted reluctantly. âAfraid itâll be like opening Pandoraâs box. I really believe that in this case, ignorance might be bliss.â
He frowned.
She shook her head. âLeave it, Travisâ¦please?â
âFine. Iâll leave itâbut just for the moment.â He lowered his voice. âRight now Iâm more concerned with settling this matter between you and me. We were on the brink of getting to know each other.â
âNo, we werenât,â she denied vehemently. âYouâre reading more into one kiss than you shouldâ¦You caught me at a weak moment.â
âI want to catch you again.â
âNo,â she said with such force she appeared to surprise herself. âDonât even try.â
It took a moment for her words to sink in, and when they did, a slow satisfied smile appeared on his lips. âYou liked it that much, did you?â
âNo!â she said. âIâ¦I wish itâd never happened.â
âIt frightened you half to death, didnât it?â
She shook her head, which sent her braid flying. âThis is the most ridiculous conversation Iâve ever had. Itâd be best if you left now.â
âNot on your life. Oh, Nell, sweet Nell, donât you realize I felt it, too?â
âThere was nothing to feel, damn it!â She whirled around and headed for the sink. A chicken rested in a pan on the countertop. Reaching for it, she thrust it under the faucet.
âItâs only natural for you to be afraid,â he said in low soothing tones as he slowly advanced toward her. He rested his hands on her shoulders, but the instant she felt his touch, she jumped.
âNell, sweet Nell,â he whispered and kissed the side of her neck.
âDonât do that!â
âThen what about this?â He ran his tongue around her ear and felt a sense of triumph at the almost imperceptible sound of her moan.
âNot that, either,â she said, obviously struggling to put some starch in her voice.
âAnd this?â he asked as he wrapped his arms around her middle.
The chicken fell unheeded into the sink.
âNo oneâs going to help youâ¦â
âHelp me what?â
âLook for the town.â
âFine, Iâll look for it on my own.â He spread a series of nibbling kisses along
