the final steep approach to the house. He moves with a certain agility. As he comes up he removes his jacket and greets John with a smile that is both timid and proud. The farmers in northern Haiti are known for their extreme politeness. John shakes his hand. Becky smiles.
Harry at Large
FOR ONCE, CHARLIE is on time. Fanfan has been waiting for him in the Rex Café, reading a Carter Brown.
âSorry, old chum,â Charlie says when he arrives. âBut the damn streets are impossible this morning. Thereâs a traffic jam stretching from the Au Beurre Chaud bakery all the way down to Firestone.â
âThatâs not the way you come . . .â
âIâm telling you what itâs like out there. Donât you listen to the radio?â
âNever. In any case, youâre not late.â
âWhat do you mean?â
âItâs eleven oâclock. I told you to be here at nine just to make sure youâd be here at eleven.â
âBut itâs not even eleven yet, Fanfan . . .â
âExactly . . . Itâs five to eleven. So you see, youâre on time.â
Charlie sits down and signals the waiter to bring him his usual (a sandwich and a glass of papaya juice).
âI canât believe you would do that to me . . .â he says. âI cancelled quite a few meetings to be here . . .â
âI donât know what youâre going on about . . . We were supposed to meet here at eleven, and you got here at five to. What time were you planning to get here?â
Charlie shakes his head sadly.
âYouâve just screwed up my entire schedule.â
âSince when have you had a schedule?â
âItâs all written down in here,â he says, pointing his index finger to his temple.
The waiter arrives with a cup of steaming coffee and sets it down in front of Fanfan, who takes three large sips from it at the risk of burning his tongue.
âWhat are we doing now?â Charlie asks.
âWeâre waiting . . . Thatâs what happens when you arrive someplace early.â
âOh, for Christâs sake . . .â
Fanfan laughs quietly.
âWhat does this guy want, anyway?â
âWhat do you think he wants?â
âSex?â
âAre you gassed up?â
âGood, when is he supposed to get here?â
âDonât worry, heâs an American . . . Heâll be on time. Here he is now!â
The man walks into the narrow café and heads straight towards the only two customers sitting at a table. He sits down without introducing himself.
âA friend told me about you.â
âAbout who?â
âWhich one of you is Fanfan?â
âBingo! I win! Am I allowed to know who my publicist is?â
âA woman youâve been seeing.â
âSo what do you want,â Charlie asks dryly.
âI gather you know a lot of girls . . .â
âWhat makes you think that?â
âIâve been watching you since . . .â
The waiter comes over with a plate that he sets down in front of Charlie.
âMan, Iâm starved.â
Harry watches him literally gulp his sandwich and wash it down with long swallows of papaya juice.
âIâve bought a small house down by the sea,â Harry finally says, âand I want to invite a few friends over.â
âWell, what do you know!â Fanfan says sarcastically. âWhoâd have thought youâd come all the way down here to invite us to your little beach party?â
âNo,â Harry says deliberately. âI only want girls.â
âSo?â Charlie yelps.
âSo, if you agree to lend us some of your little friends . . .â
âI donât get it,â Charlie says.
âWhat donât you get, Charlie? This gentleman wants us to lend him some girls for his friends. Thatâs not so hard to understand, is it? Sometimes you lend me your motorbike, donât you . .
