Lichtenstein.
âIt was pretty messy. I really donât wanta talk about it.â
âHarvey,â asked Mrs. Bert, âif that is indeed your name, what criminal activities were you involved in as a member of the street gang?â
âJust your basic stuff like robbinâ liquor stores or convenience stores.â
â Armed robbery?â
âYeah, sometimes. Sometimes itâs the only choice you get. You run into the clerks who wonât cooperate. They want to be like heroes or somethinâ.â
Mrs. Bert sighed while closing her eyes. âI donât want to try and untangle any more of your history, Harvey. Class dismissed.â
Later that afternoon, Harvey found himself gabbing with Victor Vice down in the lounge. Harvey asked him, âMrs. Bert said somethinâ about detentions. Whatâs a detention in this place?â
âThey take away your afternoon free time,â Victor answered. âThey put you in this one classroom upstairs that has a surveillance camera. You have to be reading from one of the books on the reading list.â
âBut they wouldnât really know,â Harvey said. âYou could just be sittinâ there turninâ pages or something.â
âNo, they would know. They have a computerized program that tracks what you actually read. Itâs real advanced software.â
Harvey felt irritated. âYou know, this high-tech shit is really gettinâ out of hand.â
âYou mean more so than robbinâ liquor stores?â
Harvey looked at the broad smile on his face, and then couldnât help laughing. Then they were both laughing out loud.
âBesides Harv, without high-tech computer stuff we couldnât have like e-mail or Playstation .â
âYeah, okay. Iâve got somethinâ I wanta show you.â
âOkay, show me.â
âI have to go up to the dorm to get it.â
âIâll be right here,â said Vice, still grinning.
Harvey went up to his hutch and got out the tennis ball can.
When he got back down, Victor said, âTennis?â
âNo, not tennis. Iâm gonna show you whatâs inside, but you never saw it, okay?â
âMy lips are sealed,â his friend replied, while making a motion like zipping his mouth shut.
Lichtenstein was approaching them. âNot now, Lichtenstein.â
âHowâs come?â
âBecause Iâm havinâ a private talk with my man here. Now get lost.â
Lichtenstein got lost, and wasted no time doing it.
When he was out of sight Harvey said, âIâm gonna show you this piece of paper inside, but itâs just between you ânâ me, right?â
âWeâve already agreed about that.â
âOkay.â Harvey looked around cautiously to see if there might be anybody, sitting close. There wasnât. He pulled out the scrolled piece of yellow pad and flattened it out so Victor could read it.
Victor read it carefully, with a frown on his face. He finally asked, âWhat is this?â
âI donât know. Thatâs the point.â
âWhereâd you get it?â
âI donât know, maybe out of a dumpster somewhere. I just wanta know if you can interpret it.â
âItâs just a list of places, Harv.â
âI know. But what kind of a list?â
âI have no idea. These are just street addresses and towns.â
âI thought it might be a criminalâs list of places he was gonna knock over. Or maybe he already knocked them over.â
âBut what is Klaus Kirka? It sounds like Russian or something. And what about Yokosuka? That sounds like itâs Chinese or something.â
âYeah I know.â
âBesides, Harv, some of these are just addresses of houses or apartments in residential neighborhoods. It doesnât sound like a knock-over list to me. Who wrote it?â
âI donât know. Look on the
