we have three divisions offering cyber security, property security and personal protection solutions.â
âA desk,â Frankie replied, avoiding her motherâs gaze.
Aidan saw the tension fall from Sophiaâs shoulders. It was such a typical, caring, maternal reaction. If heâd suffered Frankieâs injuries, his mother would do the same thing. Heâd reviewed the bulk of what Frankie labeled as evidence against her mother and he didnât have enough to verify the documentation as real. Still, he wasnât seeing any of the cold animosity Frankie insisted lurked under Sophiaâs reserved and polished surface.
âBased on your record with the navy and the Savannah Police Department, we can add you as an analyst.â
Aidan listened as intently as Frankie while Paul outlined the details of the position.
âYouâd be working closely with me, as well,â Sophia added.
Aidan was sure that was a mistake, but Frankie managed a smile. âSounds good.â
âMy only concern,â Paul continued, holding up a hand, âis your status at the Savannah PD. Your supervisor isnât aware youâre job hunting. He believes youâre out here on extended leave.â
If she was going to falter and blow their cover, this would be the moment. âI told him I needed some personal time,â Frankie said. âAnd I agreed to continue consulting on cases as needed.â She looked hard at Sophia. âI wasnât sure how things would go here.â
âThatâs perfectly understandable,â her mother said.
âIs it?â Paul countered. âWeâre in the midst of a major client pitch. Iâd like to know the team is focused on that primary goal.â
Frankie scooted to the edge of her chair. âIâll call in and give my notice on Monday. Iâll do it now if youâd prefer.â
Aidan watched as a wealth of information passed, unspoken, between the older couple. âFrankie and I donât mean to put you in a tough position,â he said. âWe have other options in the area and we can always just call this a vacation.â
âThis is home .â Sophia pressed her lips together. âAt least I want it to be.â Her tender, pleading gaze moved to Frankie. âGive us six months. Please.â
Frankie looked to Paul. âWill that work for you?â
He agreed with a nod. âNow, Aidan.â His salt-and-pepper eyebrows dipped low. âWe have a vacancy in the training division for our personal security team. Youâd be overseeing everything from hand-to-hand combat to weapons proficiency.â
âSounds good.â
âYouâre not afraid of paperwork, are you?â
âNot at all.â
âAre you willing to venture into the field occasionally to help with planning and assessment?â
âOf course.â
Paul stood and extended his hand. âThen welcome to Leo Solutions. Weâll get the paperwork sorted on Monday.â
The older man was friendly enough, appearing open and content with the new arrivals. Aidan had yet to pinpoint what bothered him about Sophiaâs business partner. Polite, not quite slick, Paul seemed to be hiding a cold, hard center. The man ran a security company; suspicions went with the job. Maybe he had painted himself as the protector here, of Sophia and the firm. Considering how and when the business had launched, it made some sense. It wouldâve made more sense if Sophia exhibited any sign of weakness.
Like mother, like daughter, Aidan thought, knowing heâd never dare say so in front of Frankie.
Paul turned toward Sophia. âIn the meantime, Iâm sure you have plenty of catching up in mind.â
âI do.â She was as delighted as any adoring mother to have her child home, within armâs reach. âWeâll start with a company tour, and then Iâll take them over to the apartment,â she said,
