type.â
âSheâs very pretty,â Leigh added.
Max nodded and said, âBut my life is focused on the governorâs race next year. Iâm not seeing anyone right now.â
Why did she care? Leigh asked herself. She had already made such a fool of herself in front of this man with her assumption last night.
âThe governorâs race?â she asked, even though she probably should have stopped talking. âIsnât that a done deal? I hear that an actual election is a formality. Why be so concerned?â
Max smiled a winning smile as he placed his paper on his lap. âSo you can believe what you hear, but I canât? Interesting.â
Leigh laughed her way out of awkwardness, but her mouth pulled her back into it. âThis country doesnât often elect unmarried governors.â
âYou offering something?â he asked.
Leighâs brows set in a straight line. âNow itâs you who flatters yourself. Iâm just trying to make conversation. If weâre going to be sitting here for an endless amount of hours, we might as well be civil.â
âI thought I was,â he said. âNevertheless, dating is extremely complicated. The only serious girlfriend I had since my wife passedâ¦Well, politics can be unkind at times.â
âYour Republican backers werenât that excited about you dating a white woman,â Leigh said. She could tell she was getting a little too personal for his taste and enjoyed having the upper hand in this conversation for once. âThat was what was rumored, of course.â
âThere is some truth to that,â he answered, âbut I would have never let that end a relationship if I really loved her.â
âIf thatâs what you want,â Leigh said, âyouâre better off being with her and hoping people see your courage as a positive thing rather than wanting her but tossing her aside for a more politically safe woman.â
âIs that what you think I would consider a black woman? Politically safe?â
âI donât know,â Leigh said. âYour wife was white. The only woman youâve been serious with since was white. Iâm not dogging you, Senator. Iââ
âYou couldnât possibly be,â he said ardently. âSince youâve swirled yourself. Recently, I believe it was an actor?â
Leigh didnât want to talk about Lyndon. She would rather forget that ever happened. âIâm not running for office.â
âYour assumptions about myâ¦preferences are wrong,â he said. âI married my wife because I fell in love with her, and I datedâ¦Well, I guess I didnât love my girlfriend as much as I thought. If I had, I wouldnât have let anything keep us apart.â
âYou guess?â Leigh asked. âYou donât know if you were in love?â
âItâs hard to tell,â he said. âAfter my wifeâ¦â
Leigh watched his entire face soften, and his eyes seemed to look somewhere that was far away. âIâm sorry. I shouldnât have gotten so personal.â
âDonât worry about it,â he said. âIâm sure you understand how difficult dating can be when you or the person youâre with is famous.â
That was the understatement of the year.

As CFO of Chase Beauty, monthly division finance reports didnât reach Michaelâs desk until they had been scoured over by several levels of finance. Still, he demanded to see the details, because he could always find a mistake. He thought heâd just spotted an error in the expense reports for the marketing division when his assistant buzzed his phone.
âI told you not to disturb me until Iâm done reading the reports.â
âItâs your wife,â she answered quickly, sounding very upset. âSheâs been trying to reach you on your cell. You have to take this.â
