herself under control. I wonât think about it now. I canât think about it now. When I opened the door, I knew it was going to shut in my face sooner or later. She felt the pain ebbing. Kasey brushed the drying tears from her cheeks. She turned back just as Beatrice glided into the room.
âJordan, Iâll be leaving now. The Conway party.â Seeing Alison on his lap, she frowned. âIs Alison ill?â
âNo.â He felt the child straighten and kept his arm around her. âAllisonâs fine. Enjoy yourself.â
She lifted a brow. âYou should be attending yourself. You shouldnât neglect your social duties.â
âIâll have to neglect them awhile longer. Give my best to the Conways.â
Beatrice sighed. As she turned to leave, she spotted Kaseyâs guitar. âWhat is this?â
âThatâs a guitar, Mrs. Taylor.â Kasey stepped back into the center of the room.
âIâm aware of that, Miss Wyatt.â Beatrice sent her an arched look. âWhat is it doing here?â
âItâs Kaseyâs,â Alison put in. She felt protected and secure in Jordanâs arms. âSheâs going to teach me to play.â She glanced up at Kasey, having taken this for granted.
âIs that so?â Beatriceâs voice was clipped and frosty. âAnd what possible use would it be for you to learn such an instrument?â
âItâs essential that a child develop an interest in music at an early age, donât you agree, Mrs. Taylor?â Kasey smiled and cut off the cold response Jordan had on the tip of his tongue. He saw his motherâs brow crease and relaxed again.
âNaturally.â
âIâm an advocate of introducing children to the classics, and all forms of music, in infancy. There have been some very interesting studies on the subject.â
âIâm quite sure there have.â Beatriceâs eyes swept back to the guitar. âButââ
âThe Spanish guitar, such as this one, was developed from Oriental models during the seventeenth century.â Kasey had on her lecturing voice, and Jordan was struggling with a grin. His mother was definitely outmatched. âDuring the nineteenth and twentieth centuries a succession of Spanish virtuosos, including, as Iâm sure you know, Andrés Segovia, have proven the guitar to be an important artistic instrument. Iâm sure youâll agree that broadening Alisonâs musical abilities will be a tremendous asset to her when she takes her place in adult society.â
Beatrice was still frowning but looked a trifle dazed. Kasey gave her a friendly smile. âThatâs a lovely dress, Mrs. Taylor,â she added.
Beatrice glanced down at the mauve silk. âThank you.â She brushed absently at the skirt. âI had planned to wear my white voile, but itâs rather cool tonight. One doesnât wear white when itâs cool.â
âReally?â Kaseyâs brows lifted curiously. âThat dress doesnât appear very warm.â
Beatrice sent her a disparaging glance. âI have a mink to wear over it.â She turned and left the room, not at all certain how she had lost the upper hand.
âMy, my, my,â Kasey muttered. âArenât I a fool?â
âA very cagey one,â Jordan remarked. His mother had annoyed her, that was clear enough. But she had kept her temper much more under control than he would have. And there was still a trace of humor in her eyes. He laughed suddenly.
âYour grandmother has just been confused by a master,â he told Alison. âOriental guitars and seventeenth century.â He shook his head. âIs there anything you donât carry around in that encyclopedia you have for a brain?â
Kasey was thoughtful for a moment. âNo, I donât think so. Is there something youâd like to know?â
He tilted his head, amused at the
