didn't get any report."
Brian sighed. "I printed it out. It was on the
stack when I placed it in your office, and I sent you a second copy
by e-mail."
"Whatever. There was no report when the files
went to the regulators and now we're officially under investigation
by the government for not reporting the—"
"I sent you the damn report," Brian
interrupted.
Richard stood and glared at him, "Look, you
little shit. It's your word against mine. You back me up on this,
and there will be good things ahead for you. Especially when I'm
sitting in Tom's big office. You fuck me on this, and I'll bury you
here."
Brian's heart was pumping wildly. He stared at
Richard. "I quit."
Richard looked shocked and then he smiled.
"Actually that's probably best. I didn't think it was working out
anyway."
Tom's voice blasted out of the speakerphone as
he said, "Richard, I need to see you in my office. Now!"
Richard glanced around the room confused, and
then he caught sight of the phone. Brian grinned as he slid the
page away that had covered the green light.
    "Richard?"
Richard took a deep breath and as his face
turned pale white, he said, "Tom, we were just—"
"Save it, Brown. Come to my office now."
The phone went dead, and Richard stood there
speechless. Brian said tentatively, "I guess you'll be sitting in
Tom's office a little sooner that you originally thought."
Richard glared at him, ripped open the door, and
then took off. Brian stood and paced around the room with his heart
still pumping and his hands clammy. He did hate that asshole, but
he also hated being stuck in this office. He couldn't stand the
job. Brian felt a wave of relief pass over him. He had just quit.
He had actually done it. He sighed and then sat back in his chair
staring out the window.
Ten minutes later Brian was standing and
collecting his things in a small box when Tom Myers walked through
the door.
"What are you doing?" Tom asked.
"I already quit. Richard is a complete—"
"Fucking asshole. I know. He's gone. Security
ushered him out a few minutes ago."
"Okay, but I'm not sure if this place is…"
Tom took a seat and looked at him sincerely as
he said, "You didn’t really quit. I mean, you told some guy who was
about to be fired that you quit, so we won't hold you to that."
Brian moved to his chair. "I just don't think I
want to do this anymore."
    Tom scoffed. "You've been
doing it what—four months?" Brian nodded, and Tom continued, "We
like what we've seen from you so far. If you had a little more
experience, I could see putting you into the just recently vacated director’s
position, but I can't justify it yet."
    "I understand."
"Look, I'll need to fill that job now. I could
bring in someone from another division, temporarily, then when
you've been here a year or so, and if your work continues, I'll
definitely promote you. I give you my word."
"That's a great offer." Brian paused thinking.
"I appreciate it, but I think I'm going to leave. I'm getting
married on Saturday, and I just don't see myself doing this ten
years from now. I've got to find something else to do—maybe
something creative. I can't just stare at these documents and
numbers all day without wanting to kill myself." Brian looked at
Tom and was surprised to see him wearing a sad expression. "Sorry,
I meant no offence."
"Oh, no," Tom gave him a look like he was almost
on the verge of tears and continued, "Please take me with you."
Brian chucked and Tom pulled himself together a
bit. "Just kidding." As Tom's face morphed back into sadness, Brian
knew he wasn't kidding and was even more confident now of his own
decision.

Thirty minutes later, Brian arrived at home. He
knew Jillian wanted him to quit, but for some reason he was a
little scared of what she might think. She probably really wanted
him to find something else to do before he left this job. He looked
upstairs, and when he didn't find her there, he searched the rest
of the house. He finally discovered her in
