snoot buddy.â âShe should be back any minute. She had a court hearing out in the county at two-thirty. Afterward, she was going to stop by the Cloverdale City Hall to pick up my Sunshine documents.â âOh, yeah. Howâs Frankenstein going?â âIâm taking Rubensteinâs deposition on Friday.â âGot any decent ammo?â âNot much. Iâm hoping Jacki brings me back something to work with.â âYou better hope she brings back a photo of Rubenstein blowing a council member.â âAs my father would have said, from your lips to Godâs ears.â He scarfed down another snoot and took a big gulp of beer. âHow are things going with your dead guy?â he asked. âThe one who was banging my Subaru colleague?â âThatâs what Iâve been working on this afternoon.â âTurn up anything?â âI donât know. I canât figure it out.â âWhat do you have?â âA license plate and a name.â âTell me.â Without revealing the identity or anything else about my source, I told Benny about the license plate number from the pickup truck and its connection to Nick. âCops run the plates for you?â I nodded. âAnd?â âThe truck is registered to Corundum Construction Company.â âWhich is?â I frowned. âI canât figure that out.â Benny crunched on another snoot as he thought it over. âMakes sense,â he said. âWhat makes sense?â âYour guy did renovations on homes. That means he dealt with others in the construction industry. We can safely assume he wasnât the only fegala doing renovations. He must have met the other guy on a job site.â âThat was my thought, too. I called Nickâs secretary Linda as soon as I got the license plate information. She told me that Nick never did any work with that company.â âMaybe they were on same job site doing different things.â âItâs possible, but Linda did a search of Nickâs records. She came up with nothing that indicated that Corundum Construction had ever been on the same job site with Nick.â âWhat kind of work does the company do? New homes? Rehabs? Commercial? Residential?â âI have no idea. I canât find any information on them.â âWho owns them?â âAccording to the Missouri Secretary of State, Corundum Construction Company is the d/b/a of one R.S. Corundum.â âWhoâs that?â âBeats me. I checked the telephone directory. Thereâs no listing for Corundum in the business section and thereâs no listing for anyone named Corundum in the white pages.â âUnlisted number?â âFor a construction company? That would be weird. How could people reach them? I did an Internet search, too. Nothing.â âMaybe theyâre out of business.â âThen how do you explain the license plate?â Benny shrugged. âHasnât expired.â I frowned. âI suppose.â âYouâre saying Moranâs secretary had no information on that company?â âSheâd never heard of them.â âMaybe your police buddy can help. Whatâs his name?â âTomaso. I canât go to him on this. At least not yet. He was willing to run the plate for me without any other information, but if I want anything more Iâll have to tell him how I found out about the plate, and I canât do that.â He belched and gave me a playful grin. âYou got yourself what Iâd call a real Corundum conundrum.â âTry saying that fast five times.â âTry saying what?â said a familiar voice. We both turned. Standing in the doorwayâindeed, filling up the doorwayâwas Jacki Brand, all six feet three inches and 250 pounds of her, dressed in heels, white blouse, and navy
