the motel room door. He saw Ryan sitting on the floor with the animated little girl. Ryan and Cyan were holding hands. Max turned back to look at Scar. “You can’t kill her. Ryan would never forgive you. She’s not a demon. She’s your family. She has power but she just doesn’t know how to control it. I’ll teach her to control it.” “She is dangerous. She killed people.” “Those people back in Plano?” “Yes those three innocent people back in Plano.” “She only started the fires because those people were bothering her aunt. She’s only two. Cut her some slack.” “So I’m supposed to sit back and let my half demon niece, little Miss Firestarter, burn down the town because Dora the Explorer gets cancelled.” “She’s not actually a firestarter. She can make fire. It’s complicated. She’s just half demon but not really because Ryan was human but just possessed. It’s complicated.” Max scowled. “Thank you Dr. Oz for clearing that up. I don’t care if she’s half Cherokee, a quarter Nigerian and one eights Armenian. She is a killer.” “I can help her control her powers. She listens to me. We are alike in some ways. We’re both like freshman at Monster High. I’m just in the AP classes.” “Now that’s a scary thought.” “Max, I will keep her safe. I swear.” “What’s that even mean coming from a vampire?” “My word should mean something to you.” “It doesn’t. What’s in it for you?” “I have to do this. It’s the only way I can make up for some of the bad things I’ve done when I was newly turned.” “You killed some people. Vampires are killers. They didn’t teach you that day one?” “More than some people. The blood lust takes awhile to get used to. My brother tried to help me with it but I didn’t have his strength and willpower.” Scar wished she hadn’t brought her brother into the conversation. She slipped. “How’s Jason Voorhies?” “That’s not funny but he’s good. He’s not really talking to me right now. He was disappointed in my lack of self-control. He only drinks bagged blood.” “Really? Now I have heard it all.” “Just give me a chance to do something good. Taking care of Cyan is my good.” “All the people you killed, now you’re trying to raise a kid. No thanks, Octomom.” “I’m stuck in this vampire life. This body wanted to be a vampire hunter until I died but shit happens. Max, look at me.” Max gazed into Scar’s eyes. He saw a glimmer of the woman he used to know. He also saw the red rim around her irises that marked her a vamp. “I can’t change the past. Here and now, Cyan Fox is my salvation. Just like you would die for Ryan, I would die for this kid.” Scar grabbed his arm. “I mean it Max.” Max pulled away from Scar. He glanced through the cracked motel door. Ryan was watching them. He waved for Max to enter. Max moved through the doorway with Scar behind him. Ryan was sitting on the edge of the bed. Cyan was sitting on the bed clinging to her teddy bear. “Max, aren’t you starving. We didn’t have a chance to pick up anything at the truck stop.” “Cyan wants to eat and I can go for something.” “So, let’s go get food.” Max wanted out of this abnormal situation. “I can stay here with Cyan. You go. Take Scar with you.” “Really?” Max asked. “Yeah, burger, fries, whatever you can find this time of night.” Max looked over at Scar. “Okay well I guess that’s settled. I should bring the one person that doesn’t eat food.” “Oh I eat food.” Scar offered. “Like what? Human flesh.” “No burgers and fries, chocolate cake.” “This is just too weird.” Max shook his head at the absurdity of this and everything else. “Are you coming or not?” Scar followed Max as he walked over to the motel room door. She closed the door behind her and trailed behind him to his truck.
