they paired me up with that skank.â
âDamn! If I had to work with her, she wouldnât be checking on rooms. Home girl would be in a room, because I would whup that ass, bust her all up,â he joked.
The nurse thought Jalen was so funny. I couldnât believe she seemed to be feeling him.
âLook, my name is Norm, and this is Frank. I know heâs tall and a liâl weird-lookinâ, but he cool. Our names are not on that list, right?â
Home girl skimmed down the list at rapid speed and looked back at Jalen and smiled. âNo. You can go on back.â
Jalen pushed me on my way then winked his eye at me. âFrankie, you go âhead. I want to talk to Monique for a minute.â
Toriâs last name was handwritten on the door on a small card. The door was cracked open, but the room was dark, except for the television. I smoothed out my gear and put like three sticks of gum in my mouth. Tori hated when I drank beer without her, and trust, I had been.
I opened the door and slid inside. There was only one bed, and Tori looked like she was lying on her side, her back to the television, so it was watching her. I didnât know what the hell to do.
I took a few steps toward her then stopped. I was looking down at her when the television set turned off, leaving me standing in the darkness looking over her. It must have been on automatic shut-off.
âHi, L ,â Tori said in a voice so weak.
I smiled a little. âGirl, howâd you know it was me?â
âI know you be rockinâ that Cool Water, thatâs how.â She turned over in my direction very slow.
I stood there for a minute before saying anything. âYou want me to get the lights?â
âNo, no, leave them off, okay.â
I still hadnât moved closer to the bed yet. âSo how you doing? You feeling better?â
She waited before she answered. âI guess. Whatâs up with you?â
âJust been tryinâ to get in here to see you, thatâs all.â
â L . . .â
âBaby girl, donât say nothing, aâight. Ma, told me everything, okay.â
I wanted to hit myself in the mouth when I heard Tori begin to cry. I stood there a while longer without a word, but I didnât want her to scream and tell me to get out. I had to change it up quick.
âTori, guess what?â
âMmm-hmm.â
âYou ready for some good news?â
Tori tried to gather herself. âI guess.â
âWell, listen to this. In a few minutes, Iâm going to sign a seventeen-million-dollar shoe endorsement contract.â
When she answered me back, it didnât seem as though she cared. Her voice was flat, dull, and groggy. âThatâs good, L . I always knew it was going to happen for you.â
I took one step closer to the bed and finally could see my girlâs eyes. I then tried to smile, but the razor cut marks on her face came close to making me cry. âGirl, what you mean, happen for me? This is happening to us.â
âYou donât have to say that you know.â
âWhy not? Itâs the truth.â
ââCause, âcause of what happened to me.â Tori rolled herself into a ball.
âIt didnât just happen to you. It happened to me too, and everybody else who loves you, Tori. We all going to be okay.â
âYouâre saying all that now, L .â
âThatâs right. Iâm saying it now, and Iâm going to be saying it forever.â
Tori looked at me. âReally, L ?â
âYou are my wifey, okay? What do I have to do to make you believe that?â
Tori didnât answer.
I wasnât leaving.
She finally looked at me the way she used to, and I sat down on the bed, and she reached up to me, and I held her until she stopped crying.
