hate that this is happening and I hate that I don’t know who’s behind it. I just want it to stop,” I sniffle as tears start to fill my eyes.
“Lacey?” Louie taps on the door, “Sorry to interrupt. Roam wants to speak with you.”
He hands me the phone. “Thanks.”
“I’ll just be out here. I need to call Switch anyhow.”
“’Kay.” I put the phone to my ear. “Hey, babe.”
“Lacey,” he breathes a sigh of relief. “You okay, sugar?”
“I’m fine, I promise,” he huffs again and I decide to change the subject. “How was your day? Did the ride go well?”
“Yeah, it did. I managed to source some new parts for the workshop, but I couldn’t close a deal on some custom made gear we were hoping to acquire, so I’ll finish that tomorrow and come straight home. “
“That’s great. I hope the other deal comes through for you. You don’t have to rush home, though. I’m here at the clubhouse, I’m safe and I’m going to tell Mitch that I won’t be in for a while, at least until this stuff stops.”
“Good thinking, sugar. I know it’s not ideal, but it will only be until this asshat is caught. Stay at the clubhouse. I told Louie you’re not to go anywhere without an escort – that will either be him, or the other Prospect, Saint. Okay?”
“Yeah, okay,” I agree, quietly.
“Good. I’ll be home tomorrow night. I’ll come by and pick you up and take you home. Been a while, sugar. I’m aching for you.”
“I’m aching for you as well,” I whisper.
“Better go before we have phone sex again. I gotta say, sugar, while that’s good, ain’t nothing that compares to the real thing. When I come, I wanna come deep inside you, not in my hand.”
“Okay,” I breathe.
“Love you.”
“Love you, too. Ride safely.”
I press end and gather my things to take a shower. I can hear Jenn in the room next door, on the phone. So I tiptoe down the hall and set about washing away a shitty day.
When I go back to Roam’s room, Jenn is already snuggled up in bed.
“Thought I’d keep you company tonight,” she grins ruefully.
“Good idea.” I smile. “Move over,” I nudge her legs and climb under the covers.
“So, this is the second time you’ve been in this bed with another woman,” Jenn giggles.
“Oh my fucking god, Jenn ! Do not ever mention that again,” I slap her shoulder.
“I’m sorry, I’m sorry,” she pants out through her laughter. I can’t help it, I laugh right along with her. After the day, actually, after the month I’ve had, I need a good laugh with my best friend.
Chapter 14
Six weeks later
“Oh my god, this can’t be happening. Hand me another one.”
“Is that one positive as well?”
“Yes, now just hand me another one,” I snap, impatiently.
“Alright, al right,” Jenn hands me another test to pee on. I set it on the window ledge next to the others and stare, unseeing, at the four positive tests. “Jenn, look at the instructions. There’s got to be something in there about a false positive or something, right?”
“Umm, just let me check, HcG, morning, negative, false positive,” she mumbles as she scans the page. “ Yes! There’s a false positive, just let me read it.” My knee jigs nervously while she reads. “Okay, it says there’s a possibility of a false positive and then there’s a bunch of reasons listing why it may happen. It says the best thing to do is make an appointment with your doctor.”
“Okay, I need to do that, like now. ” I reach over and grab my phone, dialing the number while still sitting on the toilet. I’m so panicked, I can’t think straight, or rationally. I’m scared and I’m nervous. The tests have to be wrong. They have to be. There’s no way I could be pregnant.
The poor receptionist takes pity on me, no doubt sensing the panic in my voice. She schedules me an emergency appointment for the
